2000 Sport Hood Scoop on 89-95 Hood

I had been looking around at different hood scoops to put on my 89 pickup but they all looked kind of goofy so I decided to graft the scoop off of a 2000 4Runner Sport Edition hood. There are a couple of fiberglass hoods that look a lot like the sport hood but they are kind of expensive and I already had the doner hood and a spare 89 hood to work with. I'm also going to make it functional.

Here is the truck I'm getting the doner hood from. I don't think it will be needing anymore.

The first thing I did was measure off the section I wanted to cut out. There are a few dents in the piece I need but I will work those out after it's attached to the new hood.

I used air shears to cut it out - goes through it like butter except where it tries to cut throught the frame on the other side. Makes nice clean cuts too.

The cut out piece.

The i just used the cut out piece as a pattern on the 89 hood. I had the center line from both hoods so It was easy. I just eyeballed the front to back placement.

I forgot to snap a pic of the pattern drawn on the hood but here are a couple while I was cutting it.

The 89 hood with the piece cut out.

Here is a pic of the scoop section clamped into the 89 hood. I had to do a little cutting with the cut off wheel to fit it in because I was a bit conservative when I cut it out initially.

Then I just started tac welding it.

Lots of tac welds. I got a little impatient and warped the metal in a few places but I'll work those out later too.

Ground down the tac welds and revealed a few holes that I still need to fill but I emptied my gas shield bottle and the place to get it refilled isn't open on Saturdays. Damnit!

Next, in order to attach the intake part of ths scoop, which is fiberglass, I had to graft in a section of the underhood frame from the doner hood. This is what the fiberglass piece is actually bolted to.

This is the under side showing the frame and the white part in the pic is the bottom of thr fiberglass piece.

Had to cut out the frame from the 89 hood to fit in the doner piece.

At this piont I can only mock it up because I can't do any more welding until I get my bottle refilled.

A few pics of the rought fit.

I will post more pics when I finish the weld work and can start on the body work.

Very nice!!

I'd like to do something like this to fill the hole in my hood that I made to fit the 3.4 in:

Do you think there is a way to reuse the grill insert without the frame underneath? I can't loose the clearance below the hood.

You could probably glue it in with seam sealer or something but without the frame underneath it may flop around in the wind. I would have put a 1" body lift on the truck to clear it.

Yes... some sort of glue or support might work well.

I took out the 1" BL for a lower COG before the 3.4 swap. I just don't want the added height for the places I take this 4Runner.

Looks very nice but seems a lot of work...

When I did my intercooler I put the '08 Hilux hood scoop. Way easier.

Can't wait to see your hood painted and shiny!

Yes the hood scoop on the new hilux is much easier to interchange than the 3rd gen 4runners. I like your headlights blizzard, what can you tell me about them?

OP, your doing it the hard way, i would have just orderd a fiberglass hood from online. But what you did works just as good.

I think you are like me and just a little jealous he has the skills to pull that kind of work off.

toyminator--Awesome job...I like how you are making it functional, no since in having something up there that doesn't do squat. Just be sure to take off those hose and belt stickers from the 4Runner.

post up some pictures of the SS, we like those too

The Chevelle was my first car. I bought it in 1988 when I was 16 for only $1500. Unfortunately it hasn't moved under it's own power in several years. I began a restoration on it but I don't want to do a half ass job of it so it will sit until I can get my shop built in the back yard instead of trying to do it in my cramped garage.

Those types of scoops are not available in the US and I wouldn't know where to get one. The 2008 US model Tacoma's have nearly the same scoop i am installing now.

Ya of course, it could not have been easy to get such a precise cut without cutting the frame.
