I just wanted to share with every1 my exciting news! I just got 27.7 MPG. I live in clackamas, oregon and attending school at Oregon State University. I used only 3.5gallons of gas; I had my cruise control on & set at about 63mph; there were slight hills and at least 3 overtakes on semi trucks.

my runner:
1996 SR5; 3.4L V6 Auto

the mods/stuff done to Runner:
AIRAID MIT
K&N drop-in airfilter
Throttle body cleaned
MAF sensor cleaned
Flomaster 40 Delta single out, all piping 2.5"

other notes:
no romping to get up to speed; just completely filled up with Chevron w/ techron for this drive (noting the 5 previous fillups were with chevron w/ techron)

I just wanted to share this 27.7 mpg i got! thankx to Yotatech & its members for helping with the accessories & common sense to not have a heavy foot lol. For all of those mods, airaid ($100), k&n filter ($50), TB cleaner ($8), MAF electric cleaner ($6), Flowmaster w/ install & piping ($130) = $294. all that $ definately worth it.

I hope you arent going by the gas gauge you may end up disapointed. These things in our rigs aren't very accurate.

 

nope, i did all the math. ever since i've owned this rig (august of 2007) i've kept the mileage at every fillup with all this stuff on excell spreadsheets. the gas meter sucks really bad so i never go by that. i know how i drive in the city or highway and know how many miles i normally get & all that jazz.

 

wow technical are we. Thats awesome tho. see my prob is that i have no speedo and no odometer so i couldnt figure it out even if i wanted too!

 

so what mods helped the most, I just did the same drive from beaverton and got 18mpg..but im lifted with 285s

 

well i had the 'free flowing' of air in mind, but the Airaid w/ K&N (others prefer Trueflow or whatnot) with the flowmaster with 2.5" piping helped. also i'm stock with the michelin radial xt 265/70/16.

1999runner- u go to O.State? if so where do u normally drive about; i'm on the northend by dutch bro's coffee

I'm going to have to call B.S. on this. It would be pretty hard to get an accurate mileage only driving 98 miles. The differences between the auto shutoff in the two pumps you used could be set different and allow one to stop more than a gallon before the other one. It would be interesting to see what kind of mileage you calculated using a full tank. I bet it would be closer to 20mpg. I could probably pull off a calculated 40mpg only driving 40 miles between fillups.

I agree with the previous two posts. One fillup isn't a good indication of mileage. If you sustain that mileage for 5 to 10 fillups (which I doubt you will with any 3rd gen 4Runner), then you can start getting excited.

 

The most I ever got was 22 mpg coming from the coast and i was in a good downwind.

 

My grandma once told me that she got 60MPG in her Dodge Durange V8. After further questioning, she read the little MPG readout on her OBC while coasting downhill and thought that was what she's been getting.

Same thing here. You need to do some further testing over a longer range and lots more tanks of gas--not just "3.5 gallons." And I suggest filling up at least at the half way mark on the gas gauge.

FWIW, in the last 6 months and 33 fill ups (343.3 gallons), I am at ~21MPG. This is ~80% highway driving at 70MPH (usually).

Best I ever got was 22.3 From Chicago to Escanaba roughly. Loaded down with bikes on the roof. No tail wind from what I could tell

Yep, i agree--couldnt see 27 mpg's with so few miles--even in tail winds i think the best i ever got--maybe 23 mpgs and that was again with a tail wind traveling down alot of hills i had alread went up.......

Try it again and fill up at the same pump or add the same amount of gas at each fill up.

Now i am going to 2.5" with the new motor and cams.......but we will wait and see.

 

my best was 22.8 from LA to bishop ~280miles. just after i did deckplate/isr i had cruise set at 78-82 the whole way.

 

Is his truck also a 2wd? If it is I could believe it but with a 4wd that would be quite a stretch.

 

hey, all i was trying to do was thank 'Yota tech' for helping me achieve something; not get slammed with the negativity. but whatnot, you all have your opinions.

but i did end up driving the rest of the tank all freeway going back to clackamas and then back down to corvallis .... i ended up getting 373 miles on the full tank (well i filled up with 15.32 gallons); so that = 24.3472 mpg.
