WTH? Did I jump 12 teeth on my chain?

I just did my timing chain and after hearing a newish or at least worse knock, I decided to check my valve clearances.

Is this bad? Did my chain jump 12 teeth or is the bright link supposed to move?

pic was taken as the cam sprocket is approaching tdc on compression stroke. Chain still feels tight.

it still runs fine, though I'm getting some blue smoke now when revving it up.

I have an appointment Tues. morning with a mechanic to investigate the knock and my hot starting problem (starts fine cold).

Should I not be driving this thing???

Any help would be much appreciated!

-Ryan

first off,,,,,,

,,,,,if it jumped twelve teeth, You'd know it, because at least 4 valves would be bent and your engine would not run.

The chain does not stop at the marks everytime. you have to turn it over several times before it will line up again. If you turn the engine up to tdc with the marks on the cam sprocket up, the cam marks should be just left, as you look at it, of straight up. And the dowel that aligns the cam sprocket on the cam should be straight up.

Targetnut is correct (again)

If you think of the chain as flexible gear- the ratio between the number of links in the chain and the number of teeth on the cam gear will tell you how many turns things have to make before the marks line up again. If the gear had say 50 teeth and the chain had 100 links, the gear would have to turn twice before everything would line up again.
