So I wouldn't say that I go offroading like many of you all do here on Yotatech....the only play I get is some harsh backroads up here in the NC mountains for the most part.

I'm getting ready to get some new wheels so I can do the Tundra Upgrade on my brakes and am curious if I should go with 16 inch wheels or something larger?? By no means do I want 22s or anything like that to PIMP out my ride!!

I know that the larger my wheels are the less rubber I'll have on the tire for airing down though.

So what's the ideal wheel size for a 3rd gen that is a daily driver with some pretty good backroad (and these roads have not been maintained in years) travel about once a week?

 

If your going with the tundra upgrade you wanna run at least 16's and that will give you the most selection of tires.

 

I agree that you should probably go with 16" wheels. They will fit the tundra brakes, tires are relatively inexpensive and easy to find and there will still be plenty of rubber for airing down.

 

if it was me i would run 15's, just cause tires are cheaper, (but you couldnt do the tundra upgrade) plus i love a big fat tire around a lil rim, what size tires are planin on runnin

 

265/75 as I'm not going to put a lift on. I think it's the biggest I can go without rubbing.

 

I think 17 inchers look great on a 3rd gen. Still have a good amount of rubber left too. I may do this next year.

 

Im running 17's on 285's and they work fine off road. The only downside is the price with the larger wheels.

20's on a 44 look awesome.

In your case, 16's or 17's are fine. Get a 16 over a 15 because there are more choices.

 

I'm gettin ready to hit a local salvage yard that says they have some 16 inch Tacoma wheels there. I think they are off a Tundra though.

Is there a difference?

Also, if I have 15x7 wheels now do I need to get 16x7 Toyota wheels or 16x8??

I just want to know what I'm looking at when I get there.

with 265/75's you need a 16x7. a 16x8 might look funky, but thats me I hate wide rims.

and yes tundra wheels will work as long as they are not the new tundras, you need the 6 lugs.

Well....I got some 231mm Tundra calipers for 70 bucks but the rotors they had were rusted to death so I'll just buy some new ones.

The wheels....well, they had a brand new 4 runner with 17 inch alloys but wanted 500 bucks for those wheels. They also had some 16 inchers but wanted 250 for those wheels. Too rich for my blood especially when I can get some new procomps for around 400.

 

Ok...so my wheels are 15x7 and I see that most procomps come in 16, which is what I want but they are 16x8.

Is this a problem? How will it affect my tires and such?

 

As much as I like my 16" Procomp wheels, If you care about the looks factor, I would go at least 17s, maybe even 18". Yes, the price of the tire goes way up (that's why I didn't do it). But if I had the extra $$$ laying around, I would have gotten a larger wheel.

As for just off road factor, I would stick with 16's.

mine are 15x 10's with 33x12.5's

 

How are they with the outside of your vehicle? Are they flush or do your tires come out past your fender flares?? I don't want mine coming out past my flares. With 16x8 I'm worried about that.

Are there any differences between your factory wheel width and the procomps you have? Also...what offset and backspacing did you get on your wheels?

Here are a couple of pics to give you an idea where they sit





As you can see they come past just a hair (they are 265/75-16, compaired to 265/70-16 stock) They were a little wider compaired to my 265/70s. Don't know if that has to do with the wheel or the make\model difference of the two tires. Also, I just have that little trim piece. I don't have the limited or bushwacker flares (yet). When I ordered my tire\wheel package, I gave them my my make and model and year and told them it was stock suspension. So they matched the width\offset to the stock wheel. I just dug out the invoice for them..

They have:
Wheel Size: 16x8
Bolt Pattern: 6x5.5
Lug Size: 12x1.50
Backspace: Left Blank....
