warning!!!! danger will robinson!

so i had a break light out... no biggie. however i thought i might upgrade to LEDs! BAD MOVE! The led stopped my cruise from working! turns out that the cruise gets a signal from the brake/turn signals! so the sell a resister for this at autozone, easy enough! WRONG! wow what a fire hazzard waiting to happen. i put them in line as instructed. they warn they will get warm. warm?? these things melted the paint on the inside of the area that is behind the tail light in 2 mins. it could have been less then 2 mins im not sure but wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so im back to regular bulbs and the cruise works again!!!

it sounds like you just messed up on the wiring to me.

Every cruise control system I've seen works off the brake sensor at the brake pedal. Its a momentary switch that's on when the brakes aren't being used (the pedal pushes up on the button) and off the second you start pushing down on the brake (the button releases).

On a manual transmission there is a switch on the clutch pedal instead of the brake.

ah sorry forgot about that too. There's actually 4 ways to turn off cruise control now that I think about it.

1) hitting the brakes
2) hitting the clutch
3) pulling the e-brake (because the brake indicator on the dash turns on)
4) low brake fluid (because the brake indicator on the dash turns on)

So basically 3 and 4 are the same thing. Hitting the clutch or brake will turn it off and if your brake indicator light turns on the cruise will turn off also. 4 is a safety feature in case your brakes fail or are running low on fluid.

i hate those led pluc and play small bulbs. they are crap and dont light up for . they are dangerous, and people dont realize how little they light up in the stock housing in that they shine outwards and do not reflect off of the tailight housing.

Not sure about this specific Yota, but some systems use a dual switch down at the brake pedal (4 wire, one housing). One switch is for the cruise control and the other for brake lights. On this type of system the cruise control module will use the brake light circuit for a ground. This is a failsafe type system so that if the cruise control brake switch fails, when the brake lights come on the cruise control module effectively loses its ground and shuts off anyway. Incidentally, if both brake lights are blown you won't have cruise control. I think Ford has been using this setup for awhile, and I know for a fact the brand I work on does.

Hmm I see. The brake light failsafe makes sense. I would personally just go back to the original taillights. LEDs just look weird on old trucks.

Junkyard or used off the internet - it should be an easy enough install that the dealer doesn't have to do it
