A few months ago I noticed my wiper motor starting to make the familer sounds of a dying motor, so I picked up a used one from a 90 4runner. Fast foward to last week, in the rain my wipers are skipping and jumping, from what I have tracked down to the motor being to weak.

So I swap out my old motor (my truck has intermitted wipers, they work great), I put the new one in, get everything lined up.... and now I don't have intermitted wipers!!

So my question is, is there specific wiper motors for the intermitted/non intermitted trucks/4runners? I cant STAND having the old style wipers.

 

Same motor. Maybe your problem is in the relay for the int wipers (passenger kickpanel above the ECU).

 

Hmm, this is quite odd. Everything worked perfect before I removed the old motor and put the new one in.

Any other suggestions? Im this close to throwing the old motor back in to see if it makes a difference. Only takes about 15 mins anyways...

 

Jay, on my 89 I swapped the steering column. Mine was originally non-tilt and non-intermittent wipers. The new one had tilt and intermittent wipers. All I did was bolt it up and plugged it in and I had intermittent wipers. The intermittent wiper module is already installed from Toyota. I do not know if your 91 is like that.

Well, I assume the 89 and 91 are going to be very similar. I actually have been doing research as how to change my girlfriends non intermittent wipers to intermittent. From what I have read all you change is the switch in the steering colum.

But it makes no sence to why I now have non intermittet wipers. At the int setting they just go, like the next setting. The "fast" setting works fine though.

Im really confused....

 

Sounds like to me you have a bad intermittent wiper module.

I tried them again today, and they work fine.... I have NO idea what that was all about.

Yeah, its kinda hard to get a sure answer on here with the silly search function. But after an hour I found out that you just need the switch itself.

I plan on pulling one out of a runner next time im at pick a part.

If you swap motors and the intermitten wipers no longer work, it is likely one set of the windings is burnt out in your new motor. Inspection of the motor is covered in the manual. There is no module external to the switch in the 90's models, all the switching is in the motor or the switch in the column.

 

so then if you were to swap a column that is fixed to a tilt column there would be nothing else to change or add?

 

Don't even need the column just the combi-switch assembly. You actually just need the wiper side but it's easiest to just move the whole assembly.
