We are still looking for a few more rigs to take this trail with us on Sunday. I have never been there, but heard its really scenic. Here is a description:

"Dugas Road is a neat run. Although it looks as if a maintainence crew has been through recently, there are some pretty rough sections. Some of the best century blooms I've seen on any trail right now. Really nice scenic views of the northern highlands.

The real excitement comes on the trail heading down into the Verde valley.
A sign posted at the beginning of the decent stating that the road was not meant for public use, I ignored it, of course, and went on my way. However, there were moments where I wondered if shouldn't have re-catagorized myself as public as the trail became tighter and tilted towards increasingly precipitous ledges became worse.

Eventually, the trail became less of a vertical adventure and opened into a great view of the Verde River snaking into the the distance (no camera of course). Arriving at the Verde Hot Springs, I stopped at the ford, hiked into Childs to confirm the gate was locked, and it was (I've seen it unlocked before, no luck). Doubled back, cut across on the 57 to Bloody Basin so I could ford the Verde on the southern approach. A group had set-up camp on the standard crossing point but there was an alternative crossing open, had to navigate some rocks but it worked out. The Verde is low enough now that, with a little lift, (maybe even without) you should be fine (walk out your course first). It was 8PM at this point, so I missed most of the scenery along Fossil Creek. This dumps out at Strawberry where you can return to Phoenix.

Were you able to cross the Verde @ Childs?

Last couple times I have been up there it has been closed or the river was too high to cross.

Any photos? Hope you had a nice trip. Fossil Creek is a spectacular area especially where it meets the Verde.

 

This was a first for me and it was surprisingly scenic and is on my "To do again" list. Couldn't find enough rigs to go until I spammed enough on the forums. Hate to do it, but I will never go alone and every wheeler I know is strapped.

We were able to cross and had someone open the gate for us a fossil creek rd. First time to the fossil creek area too and I was SHOCKED. What a beautiful place!

The Verde River crossing was easy (Click here for video). Also took some nice pictures, but as always, they never do it justice (Pictures of Dugas Rd).

I know, I know... Its all Jeeps in the media, but I more into the trail than I am what rig you have.

What area of Arizona are you located in? How often do you go out?
