Hey , my current project is a turbo'd 22RE on pane. Quick run down = rebuilt 22RE , 200A IMPCO mixer , IMPCO L-converter , small intercooler , IHI turbo ( around 8 psi boost but spools quick ) this is a blow through setup. I have swapped in a 22R vacuum advance distributor.

I just bought an MSD 6 off road ignition and an external Off Road series rev limiter. My question is , under boost how can I retard the timing. Is there a way to convert the vac advance somehow to retard the timing or should I just buy the timing boost reatard module from MSD. The MSD boost retard is adjustable which is nice.

Any help would be appreciated...I`m new to the whole BOOST thing LOL.

 

If there is a way to convert the vac advance, I don't know about it.
You can install an MSD 6AL-BTM - which has a dial for ignition retard and a pressure sensor. Or do the module as you've mentioned.

I thought that the propane turbo setups needed to be draw through to work properly and not go lean?

Another note is that LC Engineering can add volume to your head chambers, reducing compression.

 

I think I'm going to get the BTM from MSD , havent been able to find any info on converting the vac advance to retard the timing under boost.
Blow through setup is simple , hook a line from the atmospheric port on the back side of the diaphragm on the converter to the intake before the throttle plate...as boost increases it puts pressure on the converter which increases fuel pressure to prevent the lean mix issue.

 

Good luck blazing a new trail. Just remember that as the engine spools pressure and heat in the cylinders ramp at an exponential rate which is what tests most boosted engines. If you hear "rice krispies popping" from under the hood hopefully you can back off quick enough and its back to the drawing board. If not, its back to the tool box and savings fund.

 

There's 3 more 22RE's sittin here for just that ocasion...maybe I'll throw my manifolds on one of the high mileage engines for testing purposes , then when I get it right I'll throw the rebuilt one in LOL.
