well i bought a 94 truck yesterday (22re,5spd,4x4) and had to drive it home 1.5 hours on the interstate. Truck ran beautiful, although a little weak but it may just be me not used to 4 cylinder power. anyways, i drive into my driveway, i noticed there is oil EVERYWHERE! check the dipstick, it is barely on the stick, so i lost a lot of oil. I've been doing some research and i've found out that the front seal is a common leak as well as the timing chain area. Im going to get a bunch of degreaser, clean it all up and start it up (with oil back in) and try to find out where its coming from.

also, change the oil and make sure to replace the drain plug gasket. that gets ignored a lot.

 

Sounds like more of a pressure leak than a static leak to me.

 

+1 on the pressure induced leak. check the pcv valve while your at it.
also, the valve cover is prone to leaking esp. since it doesn't get much torque to hold it down

 

These motors can leak from anywhere and everywhere.. I can't say that they're prone to one location more than another in my experience.

If you're leaking from front main, you'll see a pattern of oil spray on the frame rail area directly across from the pulley.

Other than that, my advice is to take it to the car wash, degrease the @#$@#$ out of it, start it up, drive it 1-2 miles and check for leaks. Oil leaks are very difficult to find unless everything is clean.

The bad case is that if your rings are shot, you'll be generating enough pressure inside the motor to literally push the oil out through all sorts of holes.. :-)

 

valve cover gasket gets hard and cracks from the heat. Also check and make sure whoever did the last oil change made sure that the old oil filter gasket came off with the filter. It will leak very bad with 2 oil filter gaskets.

 

I have the same problem with my truck, I have a consist drip leak and it seems to be coming from the rear and I can see it slide down the gap between the transmission and engine underneath the truck. My first guess is since its leaking from the rear (or in that area) it would be the Rear Main Seal. But I just had my clutch replaced and had the Auto Shop change out the Rear Main Seal. So I am reluctant in thinking that it might be the rear main seal. Any idea's here. I also degreased the f@#K out of it and took it to the car was to help in locating but can't really pin point the problem. Does anybody think, I can add an additive or something to help with the leak problem. Thanks.
