i want to know how to add new air filter and deal with air intake sensor. how can in incorperate sensor or better take off sensor all together. i know to swithch battery and air intake, but the sensor is ruining my day. i would like to see pictures and all input is appreciated.

 

you need the mafm there you cant run with out it but you can do all kinds of filters my friend snorkel her cool air intake her ir leave it stock with a drop in k and n thingy just look at my little picture to the left and do a search!!!!!!!! it will help you out alot

im not really sure about that either. i built my own air intake and just used the k&n drop in. i want to use a clamp on air filter but i dont know what to do with that air thing.

Just get an adapter for the AFM like this one in this eBay listing ... Yes that's an air filter on the end, it just has an aluminum cover; actually works pretty good to keep muddy water from soaking the filter!

That's pretty much the exact adapter I used here, and then I just built the rest of the intake setup around it. The hardest part is getting it to mount down and not wiggle around.

I don't know if I would call mine a "cold air intake" though, cause the heat off the radiator just heats up the intake pipe... but it did open up my low-end tourque a little bit; and it sounds awsome too! I'd probably get better mileage with it too if I had a lighter right foot

 

does this work with the v6 also?

 

oh no, COMPLETELY different intake location for the 3.0...

search for "ISR mod" (minus the "" or caurse). IMO, the 3.0s are easier to make custom intakes for; shorter distance to go, and it doesn't cross behind the radiator like the 22re intake piping does (unless a battery and intake swap is done)

 

how do i get passed mafm thing? can i still use that adapter?

as far as I know, the AFM still bolts up the same, so that adapter will still work!

maybe a 3.0 owner will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong... or at least back me up on it if I'm right

as far as 3.0 intake changes look into isr (intake silencer removal) lots of people have done this it eliminates the usless chunk of oddly shaped plastic under the intake and re routs the hose, and the adpater for eliminating the giant box but allowing you to keep the sensor that you MUST have do work and are available to buy and some what easy to make, search ISR on yota tech and you will get all kinds of ideas

FYI, toyota VAFM's don't like oiled open element filters to much. I can't count how many trucks I have seen that have the anoying screeching sound comming from the VAFM.

For the 22re, do the battery/intake swap and make your own intake pipe, add a good oem filter and be done.

For the 3vze, do the ISR mod and throw in a new oem filter.

If only Amsoil would make a nanofiber filter for the 3vze!!!

 

for the 3.0 they have an adapter that goes on the MAFS that u can get at an autoparts store or ebay, then just get a 3 inch diameter air filter and that will do the job.. But when u do that u eliminate a vacuum hose, so what i did with mine was just get a vacuum plug and plug it up... ill post up a picture tomarrow just to give u an idea of what im talking about

 

superbleeder where did you find the air filter cover and who makes it? id like to get one if possible.

This is an old thread... I'd try some searches on Ebay or Google for starters. Maybe something like "Cone filter cover". You'll have to know the size of your filter though.

 

i know its an old thread but iv looked for cones like this before and was just curious where superbleader got it even though he runs stock intake now

Cold air intakes work best if actually intaking cold air. Inside the engine compartment is not cold air. You either need to build your own cold air intake box to run a cone or stick with stock...

K&N does have an affiliate that makes dry filters and also has a sack/prefilter that goes over it to increase performance.
