Leave my rims stock color, or paint them black. My last '91 rig looked good with black painted stock rims, but '91 4runner rims are a different style.

Also thinking 'bout ditchin the running boards. Won't know til I pick the truck up tomorrow......

 

Ditch the running boards.... Post a bigger pic for the wheels

 

I personally like the stock wheels, i think they would look good black, but i didn't have the time to paint them myself, plus i got new wheels.

Definitely take off the running boards...just make sure you put all the screws back in where those little plastic pieces are behind the back doors. The first time someone gets out the back and kicks that, it'll be hanging off and all messed up.

I have the same wheels, and I was thinking of painting them a charcoal black...but, I'm just not sure yet. I like the aluminium color, also. How are you thinking of painting them and making the paint stick? Are you going to use primer first? I'm worried about chipping...

 

If I paint 'em, I'd primer them first. Was thinking of that hammered black paint. Not a just flat black, and I would rather use something other than Captain Krylon......

I like black wheels, but I'm not sure how they would look next to all that chrome on your rig.

You can also take the chrome off...some of it, anyway. I took off my running boards and the chrome above the wheel wells. I still have the stock aluminium wheels, but alot less chrome...and it looks awesome. Sorry for the dark picture...

OK drkgypsy, my vote is to paint them black.

 

You know what, i personally like the truck without running boards/chrome pieces above wheels, and i took them off, but then got nagged at for having them in the garage and i put the chrome pieces back on. About a few days after putting them back on, some old guy hit my truck right above the rear tire and those pieces saved the body.

Anyways, to the OP, you can also sell that stuff. Ive heard people say they have gotten $100 bucks for their running boards. I put mine on craigslist, and some guy offered $50 so i will probably take it cause i need the money. But that is another option.


Do what you want, to each his own. Some like the running boards, some don't/

If u plan to do any wheelin....def ditch the running boards, it sucks to get caught up on them...trust me lol, as for the rims...I like the black on 904's runner...so much that I think I might paint mine to...my runners are also red, and that looks great.

 

I'm not into chrome. Too much wanna-be bling for me, so I'll be gettin rid of most of it, Take the panels off, paint or black trim tape what I can, then later when the wallets fatter, new bumpers.....

 

Here are those wheels painted Rustoleum Hammered Black. Now that is done I have to admit that I don't really like the black rims on a dark colored truck. But the finish was in crap condition when I got them so no real loss. I wheel the truck pretty hard so the are quite chipped and scraped, but they held up to road use and light wheeling pretty well at first.

Personally, I really don't like to many dark trucks with black rims. If you were to ditch the chrome trim you got, I would stick with polished/chrome rims.

Jay, your photoshop skills are better than mine!!!! I'm thinking now that I'll leave them as they are, and have beadlocks welded to them at a later date. Only seen 1 member on here a few years back that kept his stock rims and had beadlock added. It looked really good.

Whatever you decide...don't use paint.
POWDERCOAT them. They will look far better and will less likely to chip or scratch. Well,powdercoat will chip or scratch,but it will do so without hardly being noticeable,cause the powder coat is thicker than paint and theirs no primer behind it. Cost a little more,but very well worth it in the long run.
Just my opinion.
Um...yes...the tires and weights need to be taken off,as the rims will be cooked in an oven for a bit.
