I was going through my grandfathers shed yesterday, and came across this beauty. a little dirty, but it can be cleaned up, according to gramps. my only problem is, i dont know what kind of knife it is! can anyone help? here are some pics





oh, and i also found a butt load of ammo.... 9mm, .45, .908 (whatever THAT is...) speed shells, etc. i have no idea how old they are, but they have been in that thing for at least 4 years. they are in the original boxes, but i dont think theyd be safe to fire. would a shooting range recycle them for me? if not, where should i take em? i dont want to throw them in the dumpster my family rented.

 

Take the rounds to the local gun shop.

As for the knife, probably a WWII or korean era Ka-bar.

 

hmm.. i now have 2 WWII or korean era knives... i have the mini bayo off a 30yaght6, and now this. i sharpened it a bit, nice and sharp now. now my question is: is it legal to carry it on me if its 100% visible (you have to unbolt the holster to take it out) and my belt runs through the holster.

or even veitnam era the mil. used those knives for ever, makes a great knife to keep in your rig. You would be suprised how usefull of a tool that knife is. By the way nice find. I've got two just like it one is 10in long the other is about 8in both were made in the late 50's and I still use them like they were made yesterday.

and I'm not sure about carrying that knife in cali. here in ga. if you don't have a knife on you, you may as well left the house naked.

 

30.06 sure. im not really up on guns, you know? i know the common ones... shotguns, .45, 50 cals, etc. any tips on how to clean it up so its nice and clean?

 

yeah that's an old K-Bar; use some scotch brite, steel wool or even the old favorite - find a place that's not rocky & stab it in the ground over & over again until the rust is gone; don't laugh it works. If it has a parkerized finish it's probably one of the newer makes (post korean era) just wipe it with an oiled rag when you get the rust off & it'll be fine; those things are tough.

 

Its 30 aught 6. As in caliber thirty, adopted by he military in 1906. Round was used in the 1903 springfield, m1 garand among other weapons and many hunting bolt action rifles of today (like the savage rifle I have)..

Ur right, you don't get much more common than a good ol' 30.06. I've had mine since I was around 11 or 12 years old. Man I've taken a poop load of deer with that rifle along with some hogs and 3 black bears and one elk. I call mine groceries,it brings'em home.

 

It's a K-bar. In CA it is my impression that you can carry a fixed blade, at the waist, no matter what it's size. It helps if it is visible and in a sheath.

 

though my best bet would be to talk to a cop huh?

 

In all honesty, closer to the city in cali the idea of carrying a knife is a bad idea. I wouldnt bother carrying it unless you have a purpose either.

 

Like I said NO KNIFE= NAKED. That goes for pistols as well. What can I say I r a redneck.

 

I Always carry a good filet knife in the glove box. The hatchet can do the bigger stuff, but a filet knife is one of the most versitle tools you can have.

 

google CA, knife laws, its different in certain counties.

I believe if its over 3 or 4 inches then it cannot be concealed. Don't trust my word on that though, thats what i thought i read, i would look it up!

In my county if its over 3.5" or 4" it cannot be concealed. Its cool though i only carry a pocket knife thats 3" so i don't have to worry about it.

 

Actually, in that picture is it double bladed?

If so, Thats illegal for carry in CA, i do believe

Actually, I don't think that's a K-bar. If it is, it would say so on the blade. That looks more like a paratrooper's knife. A classic K-bar doesn't have the saw teeth on the back of the blade, and usually don't have the whet stone pouch on the sheath. Also, a K-bar has more of a rounded bolster instead of the squared shaped one in the picture.

 

Oops.. not a paratrooper knife... that's something completely different. It looks kinda like this Ontario "survival knife"
