Okay so the deal is that I was diving home the other day car hick-uped the rear end locked up and slid to a halt. Disconected the driveshaft thinking it was the tranny or transfer case found out it was the rear diff. So started sourcing one found three one for 100 SOLD one for 350- to rich for my blood... and the third was 260- maybe. Spent ten hours in the JY and I finnaly found one picked it up with other stuff for 260 after tax... I get it home only to find out that it probly has 4.30's in it but I need my daily back on the road. only problem is now I am taking it apart to prep it to go in tomorrow and on of the backs to one of the drums is all messed up and both hubs have broken studs can I seperate my axles from the drums? HOW? Can I just switch them from one set of axles to another? Will the hubs come off too so I can use my good studs?

I'll throw up pics tomorow but your help now would be great!

There are 4 bolts on the backside where the backing plate and axle tube meet, they separate there(shafts and all). Then you can install your shafts and everything as one piece(shaft/backing plate/drum assembly).

 

What caused the failure? bad seals/no or low fluid? I ask because if everything is good except the 3rd, you could just swap it... Hope this helps....

 

1. It is a truck, not a car.
2. Lots of online FSM material available that should help you.
3. Folks who know this stuff are old and smart enough to go to bed early and not up at 4 a.m. working on Toyotas.

 

Props for being HC kid, nevermind the old guys, four bolts behind the backplate, slide the axel out, easy peasy. Check the end of the axel to see if there is any damage to the splines, if it locked up on you there might be some tooth damage.

 

I pulled the axles out of the axle tubes but then I have the drums still attached to the axle shaft. I need the drum backing plate to come off as it is bent to crap.

The failure was cause by over heating. about 1/4 inch of build up in some places. Caused it to burn fluid all night low fluid and bam she's done. Funny part is I have it all torn down and there isn't any notice able damage except on of the shafts has some rust. The one I pulled out of the junk yard seems to be in MUCH better condition except for the broken lug stud...

Any way to fix that?

The splines look to be fine but is there a difference between the 4.30 splines and the 4.10 splines?

 

They are 30 spline axles. They will work in all 8" toyota diffs.

well kids did you finger it out yet???? why dont you refer to my getting paid to work on my truck posting and you will see everything there is to see on removing the axles and the 3rd plus i think you need new bearings to in what ever one you put in but the 3rd swap is going to be the easiest trust me an hour and your back on the road!!!!


i had mine out welded and put back in using a floor jack and hand tools in less then an hour and thats with the diff filll plug stripping out on me (yes i used jack stands)

Um, Allan.....jackstands do not a 2x4 make..

 

yep, back in and seems fine.
bleeding the brakes today.
also got new outer tie rod ends for up front.
