Riding home on the tow truck. Pictures to follow.

Something gave out in the drive train at hollister today. Everything was gooing fine. I was coasting down a hill with the clutch in, when I got to the bottom it didn't go. No movement in any gear, or transfer case combo. I figure I either lost the clutch or bombed the transfer case. There was no sound and no slipping it was there and then it wasn't.
I flat towed it about 15 miles back to the ranger station. Took a little bit of a strange route, but thats a different story. When we went to load it up on the truck the drive shaft locked up as we pulled it forward. It was fine in reverse. The transmition and transfer case where in nuetral.
The only problem I've had with it is there is a really bad shake at high speed when I'm coasting. No problem when it has power. I think thats related to my mesh pattern on my new gears. I'm going to have some words with trail gear about that on Monday. I'm assuming that its unrelated. But I could be wrong.
Any tip on trouble shooting or repair?

yeah i just finished fixing my first week of may disaster.. i to got a tow truck home after getting towed 2km out of the bush by a jeep... PUKE!!!

my original clutch went after 230 thousand km and it was stuck to the pressure plate...

since then i fixed the clutch w slave and master, new calipers rotors and pads. passenger cv axle,welded rear diff brake and gas lines, manual hubs..

finally get to test it out tommorow!!!

I've got some pictures one the truck as well as some good IFS wheeling pics as soon as I download the camera.

I had to be towed out by a jeep cherokee. Embarassing enough as it was. Then he took a wrong turn since I couldn't really back up we had to go around again just to make sure everyone saw I was being towed back to the ranger station.

It was a small hill. I guess in the help trouble shooting. I occassionally popped out of 4 lo usung the engine as a break. It made for some scary situations so for s,all hills I tend to ride te brakes. Bad form I know, but it works.

 

yeah brakes are good.... do you hear a clicking when turning?? might just be a split boot.. i just changed a cv last week.. it was like 150 with a 75 dollar core canadian... i changed it soo quick..2 floor jacks one under the opposite rear axle.. one as close as you can under the A arm as close as you can get it to the tire... then jack up really high and unbolt the 6 bolts and you can slide it out!!!..

 

I'm fairly sure my CVs are fine for now. They are not happy and probably not long for this world though. I noticed at full lock turns in 4 High they are binding up. Unfortunately on Wednesday I have to park my rig for the next six months. I can only adress the crisis right now. I have another car thankfully, but my 4runner is my DD.

 

with my tips you could do a cv in under an hour.. i did it in 2 because i was searching yota tech for half an hour.. T.C hooked me up with the tip and for that i am grateful

 

If you were in low range 1st gear and you coasted too fast down that hill then you might have thrown the material off the clutch disc via centrifugal forces.

im not saying that you are wrong ive just never heard that before whats bad about it?

With you clutch in your tranny and transfer cases are still spinning. Imagine redlining your engine in 1st gear low range. Your essentially doing the same thing rolling down a hill with the clutch in only your drive line is spinning the transfer case not the engine. That stuff can only spin so fast before something comes apart.

yep, if your gona coast it out at the bottom of a steep descent because your impatient like me get that sucker in neutral and get off of it

ZUK i didnt know you were a member of this forum, i read a lot of your write-ups on your website and found a lot of helpful tips that i used when regearing my taco

 

did you hear anything that sounded like a ceramic plate being dropped? that would have been your clutch disc. They can take alot of RPM when they're clamped between the pressure plate and flywheel, but not just free spinning.

No noise. I hope its the clutch. I already have a spare at the house.

I'd never actually hear of that. I've always been told its because you over over head the brake which can cause a ton of problems when you are in the middle of no where.
