I know this is a hydraulic clutch set up but i am not sure how much adjustment there is here. The clutch engages and disengages at the bottom 2 inches of the pedal travel. It is a 91 4runner with a 3.0 engine and a five speed 4x4. Is there a way to adjust this or does it just need to be bled off. The clutch was replaced about 10000 miles ago.

 

you should try and bleed it and see how that works

 

How much free play (IE, no pressure) do you have at the top of the pedal travel? It is a good idea to bleed the clutch as my lazy friend above mentioned.

 

bleed the clutch and adjust the master cylinder so that it is not compressed with the pedal pulled up.

 

Ok i bled the clutch and that helped some, but how do you adjust the master cylinder?

 

on my 22re there is an adjustment rod inside the cab. You pull a cotter pin out and take the pin out that holds the bracket to the clutch pedal. Then you can spin a shaft that will adjust your engagement point. Be sure and keep some freeplay at the top.

 

like said above, there is a rod that connects to the top of the clutch pedal under the dash, the other side of the rod is what compresses the master cylinder. just pull the pin out and loosen or tighten the bracket and nut.

I am having a similar issue, except the symptoms of my clutch are the reverse of what was stated above. My clutch engages/disengages near the beginning of the stroke (pedal almost fully released). This is not good as it makes it difficult to perform smooth gear shifts with only an inch or so of useable range. I checked the fluid and its full. It doesn't grind going into reverse if I'm at a complete stop. Any ideas?

 

have you performed the pedal checks and adjustments already? If so you might have misunderstood the directions, or whoever did it. It really sounds like it was done backwards.

 

I don't think that's it since it was working perfectly before I let my friend borrow it. Could the adjustment change on its own somehow? I
