WHat Gears Do I Have?

86 Pickup with the Turbo 22RE and five speed. I believe the gears are stock. I am guessing I probably have 4.10s, but I have seen somewhere some trucks or 4runners had 4.30s. Which do I have?

assuming its stock...

You should have a 4.10.

Post your axle code and I will tell you for sure

This technique is best done with a friend.

Make a mark on the tire, or use a solid landmark (a letter on the tire) that you will be able to count rotations from.

Jack up the rear of the vehicle and spin the driveshaft 2 full rotations, stopping in the same spot as you started from. Have your friend count how many times the tire rotates. If the tire rotates just over 4 times, then your gearing is likely 4.10, if it spins roughly 4.5 times, then your gears are probably 4.56, and so on and so forth.

chances are that if your truck or 4Runner is stock, it will be 4.10's.

Hope that helps!

uhhhh.... if you turn the shaft 2 full turns the tire would turn just shy of half way with 4.10 gears.....

You must take your truck to the oracle high in the mountains. Only he can tell you. Search "Toyota axle decoder" on google.

Dont take the red pill either!!!!!

and remember the axle codes or paint marks on the diff arent always 100% correct (ask me how I know)

You should always MANUALLY verify the ratio when buying, selling or replacing...

I'll take that bet. $100 sound good?

ok ok, its really not fair for you. Those year trucks never had a 4.56 option. Ever.

Definetly not stock.

In fact, if its "stock" the 5sp trucks had a 4.10 ratio, and the Autos had the 4.30 ratio.

hmmm...he said they were stock, and its a 5spd, so i guess it should have 4.10, I know I am not the best mathematician out there, but I do believe they were 4.56, so I guess either he was wrong about them being stock, or I need a mathematic refresher course...lol

Check out the marlin crawler web site and theres a place on there that will tell you how to read your codes on the sticker. BUt I would also have to say 4.10's.
3.90's were the early years and not to common, 4.10's being the most common for 4 cyl w/5 speeds. 4.30 somewhat uncommon but did come with some auto trans. 4.56 came with the 3.slows and the 5 speed trans and the 4.88 came in the 3.slows w/auto trans.

Again i refer back to my original post. He has an 86. THE ONLY gearing options those years were 4.10, and 4.30.

4.10 in the 5sp
4.30 in the auto

Unless its been changed, its one of those. So you can safely assume its got a 4.10 gear ratio.

yeah, did that, and could tell if they were 4.56 or 4.30, its tough to determine that way, so I pulled the 3rd, and started counting teeth, I guess I prob missed a couple, or did my division wrong....go figure
