85 P/U with a whine...

First thread.
Noticed a whine like a small turbo when coming off a 2 hour highway trip. I mostly putt around town. Was wondering if anyone had a general idea of what it could be.
In neutral the engine revs without the noise. Makes me think its the manual trans or case.
Almost a whistle, increasing with the rpms.

To eliminate it being accessory noise, remove the belts one at a time and start the engine and let it run for 30 seconds or so. If the noise goes away, there is your culprit. Although if it goes away in neutral I'm thinking it probably isn't accessory-related like you said.
