detroit e-z locker problem

detroit e-z locker problem

My dad and I installed some 5.29's and detroit ez lockers in my 90 sas yota and I have driven it very little off road and a little bit on road and the rear end started making a loud snapping noise, so my dad and I jacked the rear end up and both wheels are not spinning together any more. So basicaly what I am asking is what could have broken?

Did you have a professional gear setter install the gears for you?

no we did the gear install and setup. But there is now howling or anything like that so its not the gears its definately in the locker, but there is no way in hell we installed the locker wrong there retard easy to install. I am going to tear it apart tomorow and I will post my findings shortly after.

If i can remember correctly, the ez locker is only for tires up to 32". The locker might have broke.

well I tore it all apart and neither my dad or I could figure out what was wrong. Every thing looked good as new...... So I put it back together and its still doing it. But now if I take off somewhat fast I get a loud snap.... I think its because the locker isnt fully grabbing. I am just going to take it out and put the stock spiders in then save up for an arb or something better. I am going to leave the detroit in the front though until it has a problem. I would never buy a lunchbox locker again!

Well I am back to stock spiders in the rear and ez locker in the front. The truck drives a bizillion times better on the street. I would never do any locker other than a selectable in the rear now. It will still go any where that I want to with the front locker though so I dont even know if I need a rear locker.

Glad you fixed it!

So it was indeed the ez locker in the back causing the problem, so you put the locker in the front? Does it work there?

If you read up on the ez locker it is not recomended for the rear only the front.

Well I bought two, so I already had the front locked. But I am sending this one back to fourwheel parts for a store credit. It works great in the front if you asked me....(knock on wood) I am just going to keep the rear open and leave the ez locker up front intell it has a problem. But I have been able to go some crazy places with just a front locker....

They should work great up front. I would try maybe a detroit tru-track or something in the rear

Heres my problems with a Detroit EZ locker.

I ended up trying the longer springs and it still didnt work, so i returned it to 4WheelParts for store credit and bought a Detroit Locker (the one that replaces the entire carrier). I tell you, i couldnt be happier. Screw selectable, too much damn money.

I would definately HIGHLY reccomend a detroit locker

The detroit locker is a tried, tested and damn near bomb-proof locker for the rear. I would probably trust a lunchbox locker in the front but for the rear you need something beefcake. It does not remain locked all the time, but locks up when it should and takes abuse like a champ. For the extra $250 it's nice to know that your rear diff won't have to be pulled apart for a LONG time.

Are you sure your gap between the side gears and the drivers was not to much? Ibought a richmond lokright for a jeep it didnt work so after calling around ,i called richmond come to find out they had a recall on that model,they sent me a brand new one. I would call detroit ,4 wheel parts might not know about any recalls they didnt know anything when i called them. Mine wouldnt even lock up. After geting it fixed and in, i loved it, ran it on a DD with 33s no prob. Call the manufacturer they wil be able to tell you right off i bet.
