I've been thinking about incorporating an electic exhaust cutout into the exhaust system of my '87 4WD pickup. I want to be able to keep the stock exhaust for it's quietness, but yet be able to switch to a louder exhaust as I see fit. But I don't know of a company that makes a 2" cutout. The smallest on that I've found is a 2 1/4" cutout, but I need a smaller one since my exhaust is only 1 3/4". Does any body know of a company? Also, what would be a better option for the cutout portion of my exhaust? A glasspack or an actual muffler? I really don't want my truck to sound like a rice-burner, but I also don't want it to be deafingly loud

 

Why not just replace the exhaust with header to a 2 1/4 cat back system?

 

Don't do it, sounds like ass, and a ricer burner, just get a 3 foot glasspack, 2.25 exhaust, if you don't like it, then stop being a wussy.

I used to want a sleeper too, but my wife proved me wrong.

A well tuned exhaust, the appropriate muffler and everything matched and carefully chosen will perform as well as you want, and won't require you to pull some knob or tweak a lever or whatnot.

as I mentioned above, a well chosen and tuned exhaust will perform as well as any system with cut-outs and the like.

you could run 2 1/4" cut outs for EACH cylinder and it will NOT run as well as any aftermarket 4:2:1 tri-y header, nor as well as the cheapest 4:1 header.

 

By your sig, I see ur 87 is a 22r; not sure if it would be the same with the carbed as with the RE, but an open header sounds rediculous with these motors. I cut mine and stuck it out the side for a weekend of wheeling, and it's sounded like a freeking tractor at low RPMs, and higher RPMs sound like some sort of old air plane; sounded retarded, and I regret doing it. Put some sort of muffler after the cutout if you end up doing it.

But I don't understand it, cuz if your going through all this trouble for an exhaust, just through on a header and cat-back system. You can make it sound mellow enough to where people won't think much, but it'll still wake the truck up a little bit.

Trust me dude, I was your age not too long ago, and after doing the same stuff for the same reason, when it comes down to it, it's a waste of time and money in the end. The 22r and 22re were not by any means meant to be put in the PU or Runner and consider it a sleeper... unless you do some mad crazy boosted buildup (my future plans , but shhhh, don't tell anyone), then I could see your point.

If you can get the most performance possible from an exhaust sytem that meets regulations, why spend more money for an exhaust system that isn't going to get you more performance?

I do plan to put some sort of muffler after the cutout. And besides, I just want the sound. I've heard a truck around here that sounds like a supra, and it does have a 22R, I just never asked him what kind of exhaust he had. One thing that he told me though was that all it had was an exhaust. And trust me, I am easy on it (redline is 3000)

3000 redline? how do you ever get moving? i shift mine between 3500 and 4000 almost every time.

getting on the freeway, i'll get it up to 65ish before ever shifting out of third.
