check out THIS post on the Pirate Board.

You must, MUST clean the third very well, absolutely no gear oil can be left to contaminate the welds. If your gonna use a little welder, preheat the third in a gas grill or oven to at least 350 to 400 degrees prior to welding. When you've completed the welding operations, put the third back into the grill or oven, reheat it, and let it cool off slowly in the grill or oven. This will make it weld better and allow it to be stress relieved after welding. The one third in the post above used plates to further solidify the third- that's a good plan-

Do a search at Priate 4x4 and you'll find pics. Do not post this question there or you'll be flamed by thousands of responders.

Note the person who did that one also welded the spiders to the carrier, I do not recommend doing this. The cast metal of the carrier is quite weak in comparason to the spider gears and will break.

Also the ones pictured there are 4cyl diffs, if you happen to have a v6 diff have fun. They're not open like the 4cyl ones so they can't really be welded. A trick the drag racers would do for this is to full the cavity with molten lead.

Oh ya, and parking lot maneuvers are gonna suck with it welded. good thing it's not your DD.

Ideally, and yes. If you don't know how to and/or don't have the tools to check gear setup then don't take it apart. Cover up the gears as best you can to keep spatter off them and make it so the spiders can't turn.

Did you get my email about the CB?

They can definately be welded, it is just a little more labor intensive. Kinda like welding a 14 bolt...

Tacomas should have an 8.4 diff unless it came with the TRD electric locker - then it is an 8".
