Speedometer making noise--22re

I have a 22re in my 89 toyota 4x4 truck and it is making some weird noises. I squeaks and almost a grinding noise. Is this the cable or the speedo assembly in the instrument cluster?

Probably the assembly in the instrument cluster. Mine's been doing that for years when it gets cold (< 30 degrees F). The colder, the noisier.

had the same thing on a corolla gts i use to have. only did it when its cold. i heard you can take the assembly apart and regrease the cable w/ lithium grease (i think). supposedly a lack of grease is what makes the grinding noise.

are ya'll sure its not an exhaust leak at the header??? because i have heard plenty vehicles making a sound that sounded like a light clicking that speeds up as the vehicle speeds up and it has always been an exhaust leak at or near the header

It's pretty easy to tell the difference. If you press in the clutch and rev the engine, noise frequency increases -> exhaust leak, otherwise speedometer noise.
