WTF AFM!! the 3.0 doesnt suck it can't breathe!!

i have always heard of the "flapper style" AFM on our 3vze equipped trucks is the most restrictive part of the intake.. today i figured i'd clean it out.. i was shocked by what i saw.. the hole is just barely big enough to fit a cell phone through.. its smaller than my mouth.. how can we expect our trucks to get good gas milage and have decent power when it can't even breathe?? please, somebody tell me that they have done a MAF conversion!.. maybe from Split Second or a similiar company.. i think this is the source of 50% of the problems we have with the 3.0 (the exhaust manifolds and crossover pipe being the other 50%.. they are the root cause of the headgasket problems).. is this the same AFM & airbox used on the 22re?

Yeah, I was shocked too. That and the tiny opening in front of the air box was shocking.

you need to look into a standalone ECU to get rid of the AFM (megasquirt, haltech, etc.)

+1

I just did the research on the Megasquirt (MS) and came to the conclusion that it's at least a $1k project.
While it's clearly the best solution to CPU issues the return on investment may not be there.

There's a couple companies who have gone down the 'convert to MAF' path in hopes of coming up with a magic bullet for the 3VZE. What they have all found is that while the barn door appears to be an issue, it's really not.

Do some searching on here and you'll find a few threads on the topic.

IMHO the MS conversion may give slight improvements it's probably not cost effective. For those of you in SMOG areas, you won't pass the visual inspection.

It's better to put the $1k in a savings account towards a 3.4 swap.

holy shhitt!! i just talked to a guy at CP-E that was doing research and development on a MAF conversion for the 3VZE. their prototype produced 28 horsepower on an otherwise STOCK 3VZE.. that makes the 3.0 178hp!!!.. shove that up your 3.4 swap ass!... they cancelled the project because it would cost $600 - $700.. i am searching the internet vigorously.. so far i think i can put a kit together for around $500.. any help would be appreciated, and i will share my results.. if i am sucessful i would be happy to manufacture kits for anyone an yotatech for COST.

oops.. i hadnt read your post yet MonsterMaxx.. i wasnt telling you to shove anything up your ass! haha.. what i am saying is that $500 for 28hp is cheaper than a 3.4 swap.. not to mention the savings from the additional gas milage.

Supra AFM for the 22RE??? I've heard of it being done. I wonder if the AFM really restricts that much air on the 22RE.

i still think a 3.4 swap would benefit you more...

it already has more HP and that a higher number to start with for any mods to it (supercharger, etc)

just my opinion though, props if you go through with it successfully, i wanna hear about it

I run a converted 5mge unit on my 3.0 and its nothing to write home about thats for sure. Mine started out as a project and then when I broke my stock afm I had to get on the ball and get the 5m mod I was working on to actually work.

I put headers on mine and it woke it up and also a K&N kit and built an aluminium box arround it to sheild it from engine heat and it runs pretty well! the headers were and absolute bitch though and th eones i got from downy i had to port out myself because the weilds ont he inside were sloppy but they are built real well other than that. But if you go that route be careful takign out the stock studs the holes can strip out and then yrou in Heli-coil Hell!

After thinking about this for a while, on the 22RE at least, my guess is you would have to enlarge the TB (I don't think its 3"), use a larger AFM (supra with 22RE circuit board) and then increase the porting on the head, open up the exhaust and maybe put in headers. That sounds to me like $1000+ project for the average Joe.

I think gears make more sense for use 22RE owners. The 3.0 may use a larger AFM with more success.

what about getting rid of the afm. all together and use the newer afm meter that bolts into the pipe. me and one of the guys at work are thinking about trying it on his rx7. after some quick reserch the wiring is close to the same as the old afm's.

The supra afm is a direct plug and play, you dont need to add any circuit boards. I have the unit off a 82 supra on my 22re and it runs fine.
