I recently swapped in an SR5 cluster on my 88 pickup. One thing I noticed when replacing some of the bulbs before I put it in was that I didn't see a Low Fuel warning light spot on this cluster. Is it in a different spot on these clusters, or is it an internal small bulb that can't be accessed? The reason I'm concerned about this more than usual is because my gas gauge sending unit (or something in the system) doesn't work properly, and when the gas gauge gets down to half, it just drops to empty on the gauge (even though there's still a half tank in the truck). So I rely on the warning light to let me know when I need to stop at a gas station

if the actual gauge works and not the light, then you should try a new fuel level sending unit, that way the guage works properly and you wont have to worry about the level( not trying to sound like a dick or anything)

 

If I remember correctly (IIRC) the low fuel light on my 93 SR5 is like part of the fuel level gauge or very close to it. I rarely run my tank down that low though (its bad for the fuel pump).

 

Thanks...I know the fuel level sending unit needs to be replaced...I was just looking for a definitive answer as to whether or not an SR5 cluster from an 88 model pickup has the warning light. On my plain jane cluster that I took out; when you replaced the bulb/took it out and held the cluster up to the light, you can see the template for "Low Fuel" in there. So that was the reason for my question. I didn't see any such template when holding up the SR5 cluster to a light.

 

According to my wiring diagram, the 88 Pickup cluster DOES have a warning light. It gets 12v+ from PIN A11, a solid red wire (Engine Fuse, Relay Block #1) and is grounded through PIN A10, Yellow w/blue tracer directly to the fuel sender.

I've got an 88 with the standard cluster and it has a low fuel indicator. I can't imagine the SR5 cluster using a different wiring scheme for that circuit though.

 

I've got an 88 also - originally non-SR5, converted to SR-5 cluster (tach).

I've never seen the indictator trigger.

 

That wiring diagram is the same for the SR5 and the Non-SR5... they simply tag "with tach" and "without tach". Since none of the tags refer to "without low fuel light" that they all have it. My '91 SR5 Runner does, and it works.

I have a 1988 22R with carb. I had the standard cluster. Last year I put in a SR5 cluster from a 1989 4Runner, The SR5 cluster has a low fuel warning light just like my standard cluster.

 

Hey, no problem on the timing. The only other question I had about it is; where does it appear on the cluster? I haven't let the truck come close to running low on fuel. I fill it up once every 5 or 6 days, and usually I've only gone through about a 1/2 tank when I do that. My gauge doesn't work, so I just make sure it's always got gas.

I'd appreciate it if you can give me any info on where that light shows up. Thanks for the input!

if my truck had a low fuel light, it'd just be one more thing to make my butt hurt when it's time to fill up...

 

yeah i have the same thing my gas gauge dont work unless its over 3/4 tank but the low fuel light works!!! just like the pictures its right there!!


if you look at the cluster in the sun stil in your truck and you look at the right angle you can see it there

 

I just looked at my original cluster and the low fuel warning light is in about the same place as the SR5 cluster.

When I put in the SR5 cluster I disconnected the oil pressure sender for my idiot light. Then ran the wire for the tach because I was not sure if the cluster came from a 4 cylinder. Tach worked. Fuel gauge needle was the same reading for both clusters.

Put the new oil pressure sender in, and it worked.

The next test was the low fuel level light to see if it came on just like my original cluster. I have a long bed with a 17 gallon plus tank and I do not drive the truck all the time.

When the needle was in the low point I carried a 2 gallon container of gas while I tested the level light. The light finally came on and I went to a gas station to fill the tank.

The light on my original and the SR5 cluster comes on early. The most I have been able to put in is about with the warning light on is about 14 gallons.
