Just wondering how many of you out there have 31's powered by a 22re. I'm currently running 225/75-15 BFG's, standard size replacments for my 4Runner. I'm thinking about getting 31's BFG's for that more rugged look; however...

We all know the 22RE is a great little engine but has nothing to really be desired in the "power" department. Any of you notice a power difference after installing 31's powered by a 22RE?? Does this mean I should get headers too? I mostly drive highway/city.

I pushed 31s with my 22R and had no problem and I did open up my exhaust and and it helped a lil but dont expect to go 80 up and hills on the high way

 

My truck can break traction but usually decides not to with the 31's. Depending on if you have a stick shift or not, you may lose overdrive too. I have a manual 5 speed W56 in my 94 22R-E pickup. The worst that you may have to deal with is losing speed in 5th gear going up hills and not breaking traction on dry pavement as much as you're used to. The change from 27.7 inch diameter to 31" is not enough to keep you from using it as your DD. Hundreds of guys on this board use the 31" size. It wouldn't be such a popular size for our I4's if it were drawing every bit of power from everyone's DD. Off road, it makes a significant difference and in corners on asphault you'll be much more stable with 10.5 inches of wide vette-type traction. Go with the BFG A/T's, there's a religious following for their capabilities in mild off road situations, snow capabilities, and durability (50k mi wear avg). Say goodbye to your skinny stocker tires and get ready to really take your 4Runner off road.

Yeah man it will do fine, i role 31-10.50-R15 but they do rub i little when you turn all the way to one side, wheen ya back up, i got 155,00 miles on my 22re and it pulls fine

 

My 4runner is basically all stock with 31's and seems to pull them just fine. The week I went and picked it up, I drove it home with it registering 80 almost the entire time, and it pulled just fine(actually running around 87 or so). The drive from home to where I am going to school is really hilly, and I only shift out of fifth for the steepest hills, but I probably run around 70 or so(65 mph roads). Honestly, I don't think it's that bad, but I've never driven it with factory tires.

 

a friend of mine had 31 boggers on a stock 22re without gearing. it seemed to pull fine but no better than stock. any bigger youll need gears. im runnin 33 mud terrains with 5:29 gearing. pulls great

 

I have a heavy 4Runner with 22RE and 31's, its ok with a standard but dunno if I'd try it with a auto.

 

35's and a 22RE with a Auto.

rebuilt motor. Does Okay.

i have 32s with my 20r. will be more sluggish and wear the clutch more or be doggy with stock gearing/with auto

 

I ran 31s with my truck for about a month after I bought it, and it did perfectly fine. I'm running 33s now on stock gearing, and I have no complaints. Sure, hills on the highway are a 3rd and 4th gear thing now, but I live with it. Around town driving I notice no difference. I'm getting about 16mpg on average as well too with 33s...so your 31s will be just fine.

 

i have 31 bfg a/t on my dd and 32 inch mudkings on my trail rig both stock 22 re and 4.10 gearing both are fine street and hiway! i had 235 stock

 

If your 22 is running pretty well, 31's are not a problem like with 4.10s. you might find yourself in 2nd or 3rd on a hill though. I'm running 31 bfgs, works great.

 

I just moved the 31's from the 4runner to the 89' truck today, I noticed a difference, but nothing I can't live with.

 

i run 31s with no issues, it does just fine going 60 down the highway, for a 4cyl truck. i havnt driven it with stock size tires so i cant really compare it though.

 

My brother has a stock 94 4x4 with 250k miles. Has had 31's on it for over 100k miles. Using 5th gear every day. Has stock gears and everything else is stock. Had 31" mickey thompson baja claws (which I REALLY like) and now he has 31" Wildcat EXTs...which do pretty good.

 

I run 31's on mine and it seems fine. Can't compare it to anything else because thats all I've ever run on both my 1st gen 4runner and on my old 2nd gen Hilux Surf.
I've got a buddy that runs 35" BFG Krawlers on his 22re with stock gearing. That's sluggish but do-able.

 

i roll 31x10.2xr15 i used to have something like you the biggest pain in the but rump is now with the new 31's you have to jump up a lil bit to get into my eclipse seats from before all i did was open the door and slide in now i gotta jump a lil to get in about maybe an inch of lift maybe a little more not much but man you gotta love them!!!!! snow, rain, water crossings, mud, trails fun fun

as mentioned, you'll lose some top end / highway speed torque and hills might kick you down a gear or two, but the 22re will push 31's on stock gears acceptably well for a daily driver.
I am able to pull I-5/grapevine (~6% grade) in mine and for a few miles on each side of the hill, I'm bouncing between 3rd and 4th to keep around 60. and I've yet to be passed by a VW bus.

I'm wondering how my truck's gonna pull 33's/34's with 4:10's. Good thing I've got a DD.... hehe
