Head gasket problem with rebuild

Hi guys, I'm new to the forums and not too mechanically savvy but here goes.

I have a '92 22RE that was rebuilt. Block was machined and everything. Drove it about 4 months on the rebuild and started experiencing idle oscillation on warm-up (would go between 1500-2000 RPM ), like I was tapping my foot on the gas pedal every second. After about 5 or so minutes of warmup, the engine would idle just fine. I experienced this for a couple weeks and the head gasket blew.

I pulled out the head gasket and noticed there was damage to the gasket around the cyl. no. 4 opening toward the rear end. No apparent cracks in the head. This cylinder was sleeved during the rebuild. It looks almost as if the very edge of the piston was beating up on the gasket (the damaged portion is a crescent shaped imprint that has about 1 inch of arc length around the edge of the gasket opening toward the rear end).

Has anyone seen a similar problem? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The gasket should be larger than the piston.. Can you post a photo?

more info- suggestions welcome

well, I don't have a pic yet cause the gasket's at my mechanic's (dad's) house. After reading your advice here and hearing what the guy said at the import truck shop, we will now use a Toyota gasket. I will buy new head bolts too, cause they have 260K on em. I'm going to start looking on here before doing any more repairs on my '92 22RE!

My dad did some research for me and here's what he said:

Fel-Pro gasket company thinks the gasket failed, due to detonation. I do not know why one cylinder only would be affected, though.
I called Import Truck in Santa Cruz. A man named Denver was nice, and told me to use a Toyota head gasket, and to take the head to a machine shop they use. The machinist measured the head to figure how much has been milled off the part. He then suggested a .030 shim or head saver, to "replace" the metal that has been removed, and to lower the compression ratio back to close to original. We also have to make sure the EGR valve is functioning, after the engine is running. It lowers combustion temps.
