I'm getting ready to have a set of bumpers made. He uses bolt on D-rings. Seems like they may fail. Does anyone have any experience with these?

i have seen those at like tractor supply, i dont think the load limits on them are too high. I have weld on ones on my front bumper and they were double welded on, link in sig to see pics of them.

 

They'll be as strong as the bolt heads or the material they are attached to.

Either way... there are much stronger ways to attach a shackle point to a bumper. You'll also want to keep the shackle points as close as possible to the bumper mount brackets so load is being transfer to the frame and not just the body of the bumper.

Ultimately, you want to pull on the frame... not the bumper.

 

Maybe have someone or yourself weld them on for extra insurace but like stated above you want your transfer load as close to if not on the frame as possible

I would weld them and paint them. If you use Grade 8 bolts you might be ok. But like they said, get close to the mounts either way.

 

even if they are welded, the ring or the strap might not be strong enough still.

 

If you use some grade 8s that are close to diameter of the stock tow hook bolts you should be ok. A backing plate would be a good idea to keep the bolts from distorting or ripping through the bumper. From the photo, the strapping around the loop looks a little on the thin side.

The other problem with the design is that the hoop is not easily removable so that you can hook it through the loop of the snatch strap. Yeah, you can loop the snatch strap through itself but that is less a less than ideal way to use the strap.
