3.0 to 3.4 swap; Transmission questions... maybe more?
Hey guys, I'm researching for a possible upcoming project and could use the input of guys that have done this.
I'm thinking about buying a '90 4Runner with a blown 3.0 and have a line on a 3.4 from a Tacoma. The '90 4Runner came with an Auto trans and I'd like to ditch it for a manual. The 3.4 has a manual transmission that's available, I believe it's a late model R150. If I understand correctly, the Auto trans comes with a less-desirable chain-drive t-case. So here's the question... Can I use the late-model Tacoma R150 with an older gear driven t-case (pass. drop)? Does that require an adapter?
I'm sure I'll have more questions as this unfolds... I appreciate the resource you've got here and have been doing a lot of reading.

Yeah, you can use that r150 with the gear drive t-case. You will need an adapter for this. I used marlins adapter but from what I've read inchworm has a much better adapter. Marlins will clock it the wrong way, ask me how I know...inchworm adapter will clock it either way from what I've read.
My swap with the marlin adapter:

I'm in the middle of the same swap. You're going to need an adapter. I went with Marlin Crawler. Trail gear has a similar adapter also. As a side note, really check out your wiring harness. Especially the 3.4 harness. I have literally spent weeks researching every EWD I could find at the toyota site. Not a single one matched my configuration. I ended up tracing out and mapping every wire in my harness!!! I'm a perfectionist and want my home built adapter harness to be perfect the first time. Good Luck.

Would there be any difficulty in finding a transmission from the 90-95 4Runner era? It might make the T-case issue non-existent.
Also, make sure your wiring harness/ECU are also from the manual Tacoma. If they give you an auto one (no idea why they would, but who knows?) you will have incompatible plugs and a computer looking for singles from sensors it doesn't have.

Thanks for the help guys, I figured I'd need the adapter. I like the idea of keeping the newer Tacoma transmission and the beefier, older gear driven t-case.
Anyone have a part# & price for the Inchwork & Trail Gear adapters? I'm having a hard time finding them on their sites.
I'll probabaly use the ORS wiring harness, I hate wiring... especially engine wiring. I'd love to find a supercharger too, I think for now I'd be happy with a N/A 3.4l.

The wiring isn't that bad. There are two under dash connectors behind your passenger side kick panel. You need the two engine harness plugs from the 3.0 to splice into the 3.4 harness, then they plug into the two under dash connectors. It's a matter of figuring out what the wires on the old harness correspond to on the 3.4 harness (i.e. stop light signal), then splicing them. You'll probably need one plug from your 3.0 harness to plug into the back of the new ECU to supply power and ground.
