I have two 17mm caliper bolts that wont budge ive only soaked em in PB blaster for a day i need them off asap to make this repair what other tools should i buy

Im currently using a plain ratchet and smacking it with a hammer to create enough force to break it loose

Im basically thinking about buying an Air set up but i dont think a normal impact gun could reach the 2 caliper bolts please help

The careful application of heat will work sometimes, a cheater bar will work better than a hammer....not sure what else you could try that didn't involve cutting the heads off & tapping out the bolts....which would probably fail which would make you almost have to helicoil them

 

yes a 1/2" impact can reach it if you turn the wheel. You can go cheaper and buy a breaker bar instead

 

Yeah, the right set of tools always helps.

I would recommend you get a breaker bar.

I have tried to hammer out stuck bolts like you and have NEVER had success.

oo man i dont know none of your responses sound that positive umm what do they do at an auto shop (probably just try a bunch of methods huh) i work at a industrial supplier and can get decent prices i just want to know a for sure one to work

yeah or put a piece of pipe over your ratchet for more leverage.... heat works... an impact wont get it if its that stuck it will just make noise at you. if you have already soaked it in pb blast over night get a breaker bar.. or a pipe for your ratchet.. a breaker bar is cheap its like a big pole witha end that fits your socket that bends so you can get like 3 feet of leverage ....

 

A breaker bar IS a cheater bar....it's just a section of pipe slid over the end of the ratchet to give more leverage.


Edit: Sorry BigT I didn't read what you posted before I replied again. Everyone just keeps repeating the same thing lol, all the responses so far have been "use a breaker bar"....it's the same thing - a cheater bar/pipe.

 

I wrote what we do at an 'auto shop'. A impact wont work good unless you have a compressor that puts out enough. Use a 2' breaker bar

i also saw a good deal on a air compressor kit by craftsman 300 at sears
i can at least use that to get off the bolts to reach my rotor

I'll say it again; breaker bar = pipe! If you've got a floor jack you've got a piece of pipe.

 

soak the bolts over night with PB and use a breaker bar.....

Hopefully you have a craftsman so if the ratchet breaks you can get a new one for free!

 

Two tools will remove ANY bolt:

Propane torch

Pipe to extend the leverage on the ratchet.

 

yes i know how frustrating a stuck bolt can be... I much like yourself am not a mechanic and am just learning about trucks... sometimes a stuck bolt would have me so crazy that I swear i was seeing red... i was walking around saying crazy stuck just snapping and throwing stuff.. not pretty... stand back take a deep breath and maybe spray some pb blast again and go talk a walk or break and come back to it.... its not really worth losing your mind and screwing something eles up.

 

Its good to keep a section of pipe that will slip over your standard 1/2" breaker bar handle to extend its length and increase your leverage/power.
Also make sure you use a 6-sided hardened impact socket so it doesn't round off if you have to apply extreme force.

would 160 max psi get that bitch out and

and the heat method just heat the head then ratchet that bitch

yea...just use a good 3 or 4 ft cheater...it'll get anything you want off....i once used a 12ft cheater on an ollllldddd trailer to loosen somethin.....and it still took quite a bit to get it off...lol

 

They make a 1/2 drive breaker bar. Definately a worthwhile add to your toolbox. I use mine all the time on stuff.
