Just Bought a 84PU, Got $3k, What Can I Do?

Okay just bought the 84 22r 5spd single-cab long-bed pickup I've been lookin at. I've got about $3k left to drop into it. I have a few goals. Basically goes in this order: Lift, bed off, flat-bed, exo, chop frame behind cab and tubular 4link, then boat-tail and 4link front.

I'm going to be running these 37x13.5x17 nitto mud grapplers with 95% tread I traded for my wore out 39.5 boggers

I know I'll probably be needing to upgrade to longfields, but I'm going to run em till I break em.

I'm wondering what exactly I'll need to get to run 37s (so far I figure 5.39s...), and if it'll be possible to keep it under $3k said and done. I'd prefer to stay away from body lifts, I want good flexing springs, and don't mind trimming the hell out of it. Anyhoo, help'd be appriciated.

And also, learn me a few things about powersteering. I know you're supposed to pick up an IFS steering gear box, but what about pumps and everything and whatnot? I mean I aint know too much about powersteering, but seems like to me on a vehicle that never came with powersteering, you're gonna need more than just the gearbox right?

Not sure about the whole tube links but I know you'll need a pump for power steering. It'll be located kind of above where the gearbox is above the alternator on an 84.

How much of the fab work are you planning on doing yourself? Do you already have the tires? Going Hysteer?

I'm just thinking here, if you want to go leaf lift > Hysteer >Tires > gears > bed > locker > armor it could easily be done under 3k doing it yourself.

Tires: YMMV ~$600
Leafs: F150 57" or Chevy 63" / Rears up Front ~ $50-$100
Hysteer: $400
Bed: Free if you can scrounge well
Gears: ~$300
Locker: ~$300-$600
Armor: ~$300
Miscelaneous stuff: ie. Brake lines, Drive lines, shackles, and hangers ~$300

So I guess around $2500 if you didn't go with a 4-link. I guess if you are hellbent on doing the links then my post is basically useless

What's happening to the original swampthing BTW? Is this truck still going to need to be street legal?

Stock gearing on 37x13.50's.... but you would still have like $700 for gears after his suggestions

Awesome, thanks for the ideas yall. As far as the 4link goes, that's far down the road. Sorry, my post was a little confusing.

The truck will be semi street legal (I could get a rocket powered lifted skateboard with wings inspected and passed, and I've got alot of friends in law enforcement, so I'm not too worried about it), but it will need to be semi street drivable. Will have to get to and from the trails since I don't have a trailer to hook the ol cummins rummins to anymore...

Yeah, I already have the tires, so that doesn't need to be in the price. The bed it just gonna sit in my friend's shop more than likely as a spare parts bin. Armor I can fab myself. More than likely, the only thing I'm going to have to have someone else do, is the gears. Probably going to Lincoln lock or spool the rear, and lunchbox the front eventually.

Okay, well question for you Wab. Do you think I'll be able to clear those 37x13.5s with just your 5" front and 5" rear, or am I going to have to either go the body lift or sawzall cure route? Cause right now I just put together my shopping cart at your website, and trying to stay right there at my $3k limit I got this right here (tell me if I'm forgetting anything?):

Longfield 30 Spline Super Axle Kit - $665
Classic Front Lift, 5" Springs - $999
Classic Rear Lift, 5" Springs, 79-88 - $599
Ring & Pinion Set 4cyl 5.29 - (2) $329
Differential Setup Kit, 4cyl - (2) $228
Total - $2819

Everything I need to get up and running right?

And about that Longfield kit. Does it come with everything I need for it, like new 30spline locking hub flange, and everything, or do I need to pick up something else?

I'm just trying to make sure all my ducks are in a row before I go ahead and order something, only to find out that I forgot to order this or that and whatnot...

Thanks yall!

You will not be able to wheel anything over 35s without busting out the sawzall to the fenders and tubbing the firewall.

As far as the parts list goes, just email me and we can get it worked out.

Thanks.

Yeah, its a purddy truck Kiro, but it'll look even better with a flatbed, boat-tailed front, and sittin up on some 37s spun by 5.29s raising hell on my jobsites since the dodge aint get to see much action... Been eyeing this 50ft high rock stockpile I sitting at one of the sites. Think there needs to be a game of king of the hill soon!

Already called Driveshaft Unlimited here in san antonio, and it'll cost $100 for the rear to be lengthened, new square front driveshaft, and new joints all around.

I'll give you a holler by email tomorrow to try and figure out everything I'll need Wab. Too dog gone tired right now, and got work at 5am tomorrow morning. Today rather lol... Lookin forward gettin er done!
