what does Lincoln Locked mean...does that mean its got a lunchbox locker in it..or does that mean welded???thanks

 

Lincoln is a brand of welder. Therefore, "Lincoln locking" is welding the spider gears.

Yup a Lincoln lock is a welded diff. I've seen several of them and they function just like a full spool. If you have a LL front then you'll need to unlock one hub to turn unless you have FL (fork lift) steering. I had a pair (spools) in a scout several years ago running 4:88's and when the FL popped you couldn't turn worth a darn. Same thing with LL diffs. A LL rear is, in my opinion, the cheapest/best way to get a locked rear. It also works really really well.

 

I ran welded rear for 2 years, and the front 1 year. Couldnt ask for better traction, but turning was a pita. On tight trails i had to keep jumping out and unlocking my hubs, but the welded rear went as far if not farther then my truck in 4wd with no lockers before. Only real prob i had is driving on the streets was loud and took its toll on the drivetrain. Tire wear/ rear wheel bearings/ rear driveshaft u-joints.

 

It is certainly the cheapest, but FAR from the best. As stated, it increases wear quite a bit, as well as the fact that it is weaker than an actual spool.

 

yeah a few guys in my club beat on full size trucks welded up... a there are 3 4runner with welded rears and they all love them....im getting the local guy taht weldeds them up to do mine for 100 bucks..i drove my buddys welded f-150 and the offroad performance is so worth the little chirp and the stares
