4runner transmission woe's
Have a '94 SR-5 4runner with a 3.0 / automatic transmission.
About 50% of the time it will not downshift into first gear while stopping. I have to manually shift the vehicle. I have not noticed a trend when this happens. Cold or hot, in the morning or after driving for awhile, it just seems to do it when it wants..
Help is appreciated along with a fix.

Has the OD light flashed at all?
May try to find out how to retrieve the diagnoistic information for the trans and see if there are any codes. Possible you have a weak shift solenoid. Two of the solenoids control the primary shifting of the vehicle. There is another that controls the lock up of the torque convertor. The on/off combonations of the two solenoids is what determines the gear your in.
You need to determine if the cause of the problem is electronic or mechanical. When you have the symptom occuring, you need to disconnect the electrical connectors that go to the transmission (not the neutral safety switch). Now you manually shift the vehicle using the shift lever, the gear progression should be: L=1st
2=3rd
D=OD
If all is well here, you problem is electrical. But if the symptom still occurs then the problem is mechanical.

The most common cause for that problem is low fluid level. Check it. If it is fine then;
Get a factory shop manual and in the diagnostic section you will find a section titled "Diagnostic by Symptom". Look up you problem in the manual and follow that diagnostic proceedure. I think most of it you can do with a simple multi-meter.
Or if you are close to Level 10 Transmissions, have them sniff it over for you.
