Question 87 runner dash light problems

I have an 87 runner and for some reason the brake, A/T, battery lights on the dash stay on. The funny thing is that, when I drive on the free-way and don't use over-drive or drive in second gear and let the engine rpms reach 3k they turn off. I tried a few things and they didn't work. I hope someone that is familiar with this (electrical?) problem will please reply back, before I take it to a shop.

Yep, my '88 did the same thing several months ago. Turned out it was the alternator.
Went up to the local Toyota yard and got a reconditioned alternator for $75.
While i was at it i replaced my battery also.

To make sure, take a volt meter to the battery and measure your voltage. Run up the RPM's and see if it changes.
A good alternator should run around 13-14 volts when running.

Hope this helps. Let us know what you find out.

Cool

Cool Deal, Thanks for the info. and the quick response Todd. The other day I checked it with the meter and it had lots of juice. But today it was low. I would think that the battery light would be the only light that would come on. I guess since the alternator was just about to go out it wasn't getting enough juice at times and caused all of them to come on. Well, the moral of the story is that I changed both today. It took a little time to get the alternator out. It was easy to un-bolt, but I spent most of the time getting it out of the engine compartment. Then I fired her up and the lights went off...

Thanks for the info.
Done Deal
Time for some cruzin in the rig
