22R Enginge Replacement Problems

I have a 87 Toyota 4X4 that sat for about 1 and half years. I just put in a ussed engine that I bought from a shop that sells used engines. The truck will not start I have checked all the wires and made sure the Distributor is set to tdc
with the rotor pointing to #1 wire on the distributor. I replaced the fuel pump. I am thinking that I need to replace the carberator. But it should at least start and run pourly if something was wrong with the Carberator. the engine is getting spark and I put fuel in the carberator. does anyone have any ideas on what I should check next. I replaced the Fuel Pump the engine cranks over but will not give any sign of firing.
Thanks Fon...

Check the firing order. If that checks out, you might be off by 180 degrees. Either pull the valve cover and make sure the dimple on the cam timing sproket is on the top when your dis. is at #1 wire, or pull #1 spark pull and crank engine with 19mm socket on crank shaft pulley until you feel the compression stroke. Stop when the crank mark reaches 0. Pull your distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. If incorrect reset timing. Your valves may also be too tight, the specs should be on the tune up sticker in the engine compartment.
good luck, HTH
