I am hoping that this a kinder gentler forum

I am a new owner of an '84 LC FJ60. I have owned older 4WD's before, but this is a first with a manual choke.

The LC is completely stock and the carb has been rebuilt within the last 1000 miles.

The guy who sold it to me said to pull out the choke and pump the gas 3-4x. Apparently that's not the way to do it, because after I had the carb rebuilt, the mechanic told me a different way. He said that for normal starting, I should just pull the choke all the way out and start as normal. If it was below zero pull the choke all the way out and pump the gas 1x, if 20 below, pump 2x. He said that the LC starts great for him.

I have also been told to press the gas pedal down and hold, pull out the choke and then start as normal. It seems to start best using this method.

I find that in the mornings that I have to give it 2 pumps and then it takes some cranking before it fires. I live in Colorado, so it's been pretty cold here. After driving it say to the store where it sits for 10 - 30 minutes, I have a hard time starting it, using the method above.

So here's my questions. How do I use the manual choke? During a cold start? Warm start?

Sorry for the long post, but I have been pretty frustrated with this issue.
Please be gentle for the dense new LC owner.

Use it however works best for a cold start, but then leave it alone unless the rig sits for 3-4 hours in cold weather

Thanks for the advice. I was just worried about screwing something up by not using it correctly.

No bad experience at another forum. I was just asking what I thought might be silly question.
