Ok, I am a new owner, 2002 4runner V6 2wd with 95k on it. Everything is in good condition, truck runs great, gets about 19-20mpg city (I am not usually a crazy driver).

I went to get oil, and when I was leaving the store, I floored it to get out ahead of traffic. When the rear tires went through the little curb for the rain, I got a little wheelspin, and VSA kicked on for a second (it was dry out). After driving a few miles down the road, and a few stop lights, I was sitting at the light and my 'Trac Off', 'Check engine', and 'VSA Trac' lights popped on. When I got home, I turned the truck off, and turned it on again, and all the lights came back and stayed on. Anyone have any ideas? Not sure where to start checking to fix it.

All those lights come on when you get a troble code, aka check engine light.

First step is to go to AutoZone or somewhere similar and have them read your codes, for free. Then report back to us with the code.

don't bother guessing or attempting things untill you get it scanned. Otherwise you are taking shots in the dark.

 

Well, I have a stock air filter, its clean not sure what brand. (Its grey plastic, and a white filter.)

I did do the intake mod where you cut the circle out of the front of the air box, and I have a screen over that. Hopefully that didnt screw it up.

Are you able to jump the connectors on the 4runners so I dont have to go to autozone to get it checked? I know some OBD2 cars you can do it.

 

The first and easiest thing to do when all the lights come on is to check the gas cap.

 

Ok, I will do that in the morning. I figured it was traction control related since I had done that.

I need to search at work tomorrow, but is there an easy way to make the traction control button actually work for more than 10 seconds?

 

Its free to do it so just bite the bullet and head down. Your taking shots in the dark trying to guess what the issue is instead of having your 4Runner tell you what it is.

Trac lite comes on when the check eng lite comes on so don't worry about the trac system

 

If they were open at 9:30 last night, I would have done that, but unfortunately they arent.

edit: and the gas cap didnt work...

 

Well they pulled the code, even though I guess they arent supposed to do it after dark.

It was P1135, i guess the MAF, ill try cleaning it and hope it goes away

 

Well I finally found some electronics cleaner and tried to clean the MAF. Sprayed it on it, let it sit, and popped it back in. No change, CEL still stays on, then the traction, and the other light come on after a few seconds of running.

I then tried to reset the ECU by pulling the EFI fuse for about 15 minutes, and it gave me the same response... a CEL

Any ideas... or should I keep looking for a new MAF?

 

What is the code meaning? Don't use electronics cleaner. use brakekleen and compressed air on your MAF. Sometimes the efi fuse wont shut off the light. Try and use a scantool to clear it. Depending on the code definition, if it really is your MAF thats bad, I happen to have a brand new one for sale on here much cheaper than the dealer.

 

I'm betting its your air/fuel ratio sensor. Same thing as a o2 sensor pretty much

yes its safe. It cleans and dries fast. A way to kill the MAF is touching the hotwire with your fingers or anything else for that matter. Brakekleen it, blow it off.

 

If you are pulling a MAF code it is also good to check around the airbox and intake for any holes or leaks. Also, disconnect the battery instead of the EFI fuse.

 

Ok, well I repeated the cleaning with brakleen and compressed air. CEL wasnt on, but then popped on after a few seconds of running.

I am going to swing by autozone again to make sure the code is the same as above.

I did do the airbox mod (cut a hole in the front of the box... right behind the headlight, and I have a thick screen as a filter.) But the rest of the engine/airbox is in mint condition, so no holes or anything.

So I would kinda like to see if its the O2 or the MAF before dropping money. The code on the scanner did say something similar to "air/fuel controller"

 

I'm pretty sure its your a/f sensor. (o2 sensor) If you do end up sometime needing a MAF, let me know since I have one and NO ONE has bought it yet. lol
