Been lurking for a while and slowly working on my 02 Sport with some of the advice given here. Thanks!
I am trying to work out some lighting issues.
I have the yakima basket and have a set of the light brackets for it, but I dont know if adding lights is a good option.
My wife drives the truck all the time, we take it camping 3-4 times a year up in the mountains and the rack is used to haul camp gear. I want some lights up there for mountain road driving at dusk/ night, but the expense for 3-4 times a year use is the problem. I was thinking just adding a set of $50 autostore lights as a just in caes of headlight cracking from a rock type thing.
Any thoughts?
Also - the factory driving lights - the glass lense has been cracked twice on the driver side fog light. I replaced it once at the tune of $200, but now I am just pissed. The lamp works, but has not outer glass protector. I was thinking of getting some 1/4 inch polycarbonate plastic and making a new lens, but how hot do those little lights get? will the heat warp or melt the poly?
Any help or ideas are awesome. Thanks in advance

Here's my rack with lights on top. Of coarse I keep the covers on unless I'm gonna use them. The outside two are driving range and the center is long range.

What do think about making the lense out of the poly though? I am just worried that the inner "bubble" lense will melt the outter poly lense.
I really dont want to shell out another$$$$$$$ for a stupid light...

yeah its nice, but if you were there in the summer you'd step out of your rig, jump back in, and say '&$K THAT!!' az gets even hotter than vegas.. somehow...

 

the factory fog lights are a rip off. $350 for a new one, not a pair.
I found a online place that has made in china versions for $120.

 

It does get a little warm here in Tucson AZ in the summer. But it's worth it the other 10 months. Mountains on all four sides with miles of trails.

I bought all 3 Daylighters for $195. It really is a rip what they want for some oem parts. I agree plastic will probably melt on any light with more than 65 watts. Does anyone make a light that would fit at a fraction on the price?

 

where did you guys run the wiring to? i am getting a basket and have the lights to mount already. just need to figure out a way to mount them and run the wiring.

 

I ran the wires inside the tubes to the rear side of the rack and then thru a grommet and down the pass quarter panel. I'm putting a rear dual battery setup for both my lights and my air pumps.

 

I ran the wires from my roof rack down towards the rear passenger door (driver side), then ran the wires behind the weatherstrip forward into the engine bay.

 

Back when I still had a rack, I wired my rack lights similar to Roadrunner .

For the front 4 rack lights, a single large power wire was run down the driver side door of the 4Runner's weather stripping and into the engine bay. The ground wire for these 4 lights was tapped into the oem rack rail.

The power & ground wire for the 2 rear lights were both routed down the passenger side door of the 4Runner's weather stripping and into the engine bay.
