ok so im in northern california, and perfect timing to get a transfer case that doesnt engage 4wheel drive while its blowing the largest storm on the west coast in 3 years. so it all happened as i was driving up to work at the ski resort here in mt. shasta and it was icy and full of snow when i notice im not going anywhere. i have used my 4wheel drive strait for the past 3 days with no problems and then this morning it doesnt work? any ideas any help will be much appreciated im stranded without 4 wheel drive in this storm! ive tryed all the tricks, drive in reverse, activate in neutural everything like that and ive checked all the vaccume and sensor lines and all seem to be in order. im 99% sure it is the transfercase becaus the front driveshaft spins freely with my hubs locked and shifted into 4wheel drive so i dont know what is going on.

id check the chain in the transfer case, unfortunately.

 

there is no grinding sound or clunking would it still be that?

 

it probably snapped, thus causing the 4wd not to engage. remember on bicycles, when the chain broke, you wouldnt get a grinding, but you also wouldnt move? same concept.
