aftermarket amplifier with stock head unit?
I want to keep the factory head unit in my 4runner but am tired of its weak output. is it possible to splice in an external amplifier into the stock head unit? If so, how?

It's a line output converter. You don't necessarily have to get it from Crutchfield, but it is a nice site to do research on.

interesting. if i'm understanding this gizmo correctly, you connect your speaker leads coming from the HU to the input, then connect RCA jacks from the output to your amp. then you run speaker leads from the amp to your speakers. does this sound right?

yep, sounds about right...or you could just buy an amp that also includes speaker level inputs (which gets the signal straight from a speaker wire), but i'd just do like you stated before...
