BFG All-Terrain T/A® KO vs. Pro Comp All-Terrain
Hey everyone,
Its about that time again -- time for new tires.
I've been doing lots of reading and research over the past few days and have narrowed my decision down to either BFG All-Terrains or Pro Comp All-Terrains.
Most of my driving is highway. However, with the Oceano Dunes only 10 minutes away, i go out there about once or twice a month. Also, with winter coming up, I go snowboarding every chance i get. (my gf hates winter because she says she never gets to see me
)
So I just wanted to see what your guys' opinions are.
Tire size is 31x10.50x15
I'm kinda leaning towards the BFGs but the sales guy from 4wheelparts said he'd be able to get me a good deal on pro comps.
Lemme know what you think

You will probably happy with either tire so go with the savings on the ProComps. The 50,000 mile warranty is a nice feature also and is something the BFG doesn't have.
I've had BFG 31x10.50 ATs on my Nissan and I can't say enough good things about them. I couldn't hardly shake those things loose in the snow. I found with 31's my truck could easily handle up to 8" depth of snow with out any real problems and open diffs. 9 to 10" gave me trouble.
More thoughts on the BFGs...I liked the aggressive looks and the extra tread on the side walls. The rim guard seemed like a nice feature but my buddy who mounted them on the wheels hated that feature, but he is grouchy anyways. I got good tread life on my tires and I had them mounted on 15x8 ARE Bajas.
From the link you posted it looks like the BFG is .5" taller than the procomp putting the procomp closer to 30" and the BFG closer to 31".
For what you need them for and both having a severe weather rating go with the best deal on your wallet.

both are great tires, the BFG is the somewhat more aggressive of the 2
i've never personally ran the PC's but i've heard nothing but good things about them
Pro Comp usually has some of the best deals (ie. buy 3 get the 4th free) so i would go with them

we didn't talk any prices, but since i missed the buy 3 get 1 free deal, the sales guy said he'd be able to get me a good deal.
I also asked him when the buy 3 get 1 free deal was going to happen next, he said maybe sometime in march.
yeah that is a definite plus.

I worked at a tire shop for 6 months...
Blown out BFG AT.... 9
Blown out pro-comps....1
The BFG's cup tend to cup more often....
I've seen a few of them seperate, but never a procomp.
The pro-comps, if you keep them at the correct pressure and rotate them every 6k, (also assuming your alignment, shocks, yada yada are correct) can go for 60k. I've even seen 62k.
Plus, they are cheaper.

i say BFG. its a better brand name. theres been nothing my BFGS wouldnt pull me out of.. including pretty deep mud. not the mudpits they got back east, but when i get stuck in mud when im campin and it rains lol. also ive heard procomps, while they, along with the BFG, have the extreme weather rating, they dont do so well in extreme weather. ive heard they slip and slide a hell of a lot more than BFGs.

Tire cupping problems isn't caused by the tires, it's caused by the the vehicle their on. If you wear out a set of Procomps at 30K do you think they'll replace them for free? I have never seen nor heard of anybody getting 60K out of a set of Procomps. Infact, I have a couple friends that work at 4WP, and call them bubble gum tires because the softness, one of them is half way through their second set of PC's while I'm on my first BFG's still. I do think a lot depends how you drive, but that is a huge difference.

As tortise said, my opinion is my opinion. I have never ran the procomps but have ran BFG's. I love em. never had anything but good luck and incredibly long life. was going to run them on my truck with the new wheels but got an unbeatable deal on the mickey thompson baja ATZ, which I have been running for a while now and am greatly pleased with them. I will recommend these to anybody. great traction, good wear, plus I can say I have mickey thompson
. (inside joke with a friend who used them on a dragster). good luck with your choice. BTW, If my spelling is horrible I don't care.

froggy i have to disagree with u on the ATZ's i ran them 33/12.5/15 and as far as ride quailty and handling went my BFG M/t's are better, havent had the bfg's on rocks yet but on the rocks i split the sidewall on my ATZ and had to go to town and get a spare it was a bad experience for me and i would consider a baja claw but never a ATZ again

I'd go with BFGs! On my second set, with the first lasting 65k. Can't go wrong with those IMHO. But, I've heard that the ProComps are quite a bit cheaper, and if you offroad alot they are supposedly a stickier tire.

As always, there are many variables. You have to choose the tire that is best for you. Either one will be a good tire, get what fits your budget, and what you like the looks of.
Here is my experience and opinion.
My family is currently running BFG ATs on all 6 of our vehicles. That is a set of 265/70R16 on our 04 Tacoma, a set of 265/75R16's on our 97 4runner, my brothers 94 4runner is running a set of 235/75R15, my turbo has 30x9.50R15's and my 4runner has 33x9.50R15's. Our scout plow truck has 31x10.50R15's.
Yeah, we like the tire.
Now, the wear arguments are vaild. These are an agressive AT tire. However, the Nitto AT tire is also pretty agressive (IMO less so, but thats my opinion). It wears better. Still, we usually get around 30k out of a set of the BFG's.
All of these trucks except the plow truck get wheeled to various degrees. My brother is a hardcore extreme skier, and goes to backcountry spots all over Colorado, and UT in the winter. All the trucks see trails in Moab at least once a year.
As for durability offroad, mine are damn good. My 4runner has front and rear ARB's, is geared to the gills, and is heavily armored. You can ask those I wheel with how it gets used. I'm not easy on the tires. I've gotten flats, but both times the only tire that would have held up would have been a swamper. Certainly any other AT would have gone as well, and many other times.
A lot has been said about the sidewalls. They are 3 ply, and pretty damn tough. For reference, on a trail in colorado, i got wedged in a tricky obstacle. I was able to drive out, but it took some improvisation, and i ended up stripping almost ALL of the lettering off the side of the tire. you have to rub a tire HARD to do that. No flat, just fine until it was replaced.
Is the traction of an MT tire, or a rock tire? No. You will find it lacking in some areas where a heavy tread tire will be stellar. It is, however, an excellent multi-use tire. If you see offroad on the weekends, but on road all week, you can't really go wrong with the BFG.
