Auto trans shifting? (I searched)

So I got my first Toyota with an auto. Its a 92 4runner with a 22RE. I do not know if it is shifting right or not as it seams to hunt around the gears a lot. One thing I did notice is that when shift through the gears, as soon as it goes into 4th the coverter locks up. Also as soon as the converter unlocks it goes into 3rd. It never just drives in 4th without lockup of the converter as well. Is this normal or is my TV cable out of wack?

Hey Flash. My '94 22re with an a340F auto tranny has been like that since new. I used to wonder about it because it would go 1-2-3-then the RPM would increase for a couple seconds, then go into 4. Is this what yours does? After a while I just stopped worrying about it. I now have 175k on the truck with no tranny problems. I have changed the ATF every 30k.

Checking the adjustsment on the Throttle Cable is very easy...
-Find the Cable where it attaches to the throttle. Notice how it has a rubber boot a couple inches long.
-Twist the Throttle fully clockwise (with your engine off of course)
-You should see a little metal stopper come to the end of the boot, it should be either flush with the end, or stick out no more than 1mm.
-adjust the two nuts on the cable if this distance is not standard.

Ya sort of the same but it goes 1.......2.......3..............4..lock. It does not drive in 4th for a bit before the converter locks. My old chev blazer would not lock the converter until you have very light pressure on the pedal. This was good because it would not hunt around so much. This thing as soon as you start to have a load it unlocks the converter and backshifts to 3rd without letting 4th try and pull the load.

Another question is what is this ECT button do? And what does it stand for? I push it and I don't feel any differance in shifting or anything???

ECT= Electronically Controlled Transmission. When you push it, you will see a "ECT POWER" light on the dash. This just delays the shift points a few MPH when accelerating.

I seem to have this same problem but I have the V6 auto trans. It only happens when its cold but its shifts 1,2,3 and waits forever to go to 4th. Is this the same problem you guys are having?

Its supposed to do that. Unless the truck is fully warmed up it will not shift into OD
