Well, now after a new AFM, TPS, O2 sensor, and checked spark plug wires and cap and plaugs, my 22re in my 1986 4runner still runs crappy. It doesn't idle well at all, and has very little power to none while driving. I am lost as to what to approach next. How often does the ECU go out? Is this a major problem with this engine? PLease help me out.

 

when you say checked you mean you ohm the wires and looked at the plugs? did you set the TPS to spec? i hate that job!!!!!!
fuel filter?
did it just all of the sudden start running bad?
have you checked the vacuum lines for cracks?
have you checked for codes?

 

Yeah, and I am a little unsure about how to put the TPS to spec. A little help? As for the codes, it pulls1, which is normal operation. So that is what is confusing me.

 

how is it at idle? or is it just under load it runs crappy.
mine has no power till 3000 rpms then it's fine and thats only warm so i'm lost to
cuz it runs great cold

Check your distributor cap! I have a car with a very small crack in the distributor cap that was causing bad firing order.

 

i noticed you did not add that you replaced all the filters (air, fuel) ?

injectors may need replacement or full service.
fuel pressure regulator may have broken a diaphragm.

after the cheap stuff, check your fuel pressure before and after the F.P.R. to be certain its at a normal level.

maybe even bad gas. or water in the gas.

22re engines are only known for timing chain wearing through the block.*after years of neglect*

 

Hopefully this is not it, but it happened to me so I'll try. I went through all of that with a '91 with a 22re. After a compression check I discovered only one of the cylinders had normal compression. Later I found out the head was warped. The funny thing is that I drove it that way for about 3 months trying to figure out what the prob was. I even took it to a mechanic and all he did was give it a tune up.

 

whens the last time the valves were adjusted? you can do that and check the timing chain.

also adjust the tps, if its out of spec.

well i checked the valves and timing chain and everything is fine. after a while of running. it leans out, but it still doesn't idle very well. Obviously the Thermo Water sensor is working, but something else isn't. When I unplug the auxiliary air line from the bottom left of the throttle body it seams to idle better. Could that be the problem?

 

I just took my my 93 22re into the dealership because of its looping idle. They say its the auxiliary air valve under the throttle body. I just took mine off and it looks a little bunged up inside with rust. I'm waiting to grab a whole throttle body off a friends part truck tomorrow, to see if it'll make a difference.

 

Are the RPM's high when the engine is cold? Do they drop once the engine has warmed up? The purpose of the auxiliary air valve is to increase the idle speed while the truck is cold. If the idle is low when the engine is cold but then it gradually increases as your temp rises, your air valve is not functioning properly. It's likely that the valve is stuck closed if that is the case. If the cold idle is high and then the idle doesn't drop the valve may be stuck open. The air valve should not really effect the power of you vehicle. Have you checked your ignition timing? Maybe the timing is way off.

 

Checked the timing, and its good, right on. As for the idle, it is low from the start, and through acceleration, it is very sputery and not smooth. The codes still aren't coming up, I just get a normal operation code. It still runs a little rich also.

 

then i guess it time for a chevy 4.3 swap or a new 4 banger

 

are the wires going to the coil pack switched?

 

if you have a diagnostic tool handy try switching the injectors on and off to find out if one isn't firing

 

well, all the plugs are equally black when pulled out. Now, it doesn't idle very well. And I have to say, it hasn't been like this for long. Withing a couple of hours, this problem occured, so it hasn't been developing.
