Now it looks as though I have opened up a new can of worms. I added a fuel pressure regulator to my truck since it kept flooding itself out. It has an electric pump which bypasses the mechanical pump. Since adding the regulator this is what happens.
When I set the regulator at anywhere between 3 1/2 - 5 1/2 psi it won't idle and floods and stalls out. When I set it at 3 it will idle fine but when I put it into gear and rev up it sputters out as if it is not getting enough fuel. Below 3 it will die eventually from lack of fuel. I've tried various settings on the gauge and tried it with and without the fuel return line. I'm at a loss here.

A couple questions on top of any advice you guys can give me.
Should the float in the sight glass maintain a steady level at these psi ratings?
If so what do I need to do to get my float to stop the flow of fuel if it is getting to flood stage? My float will go all the way up and out of sight above 3psi and all the way down out of sight below 3 psi.
Will the back pressure in the fuel line kill a fuel pump if there is no return line to the tank??
Is the return line necessary?
I know this is alot of questions and I would appreciate any help you guys can give.

sounds to me like you have a carburetor problem.

 

get your carb rebuilt....or get a rebuilt weber (for the tuneability)...get rid of alll that aftermarket fuel system stuff...go back to the manual pump...i had the same stuff on my 80' when i got it...(1980 4x4 short bed 20R)...sometimes it would do the same thing....took all that off..hooked up the manual pump...and it ran like a dream...lol

 

Would one of you guys be willing to post a picture of the stock fuel system and how and where the return lines are hooked up? Thanks

 

its too dark right now here in Vian,OK but i will post some up tomorrow...my engine bay is pretty nasty...but i think it'll be ok...

Looks to me that you have a 22R intake manifold or something

 

now i know why he is running the electric fuel pump...lol...if you want it to be mechanical...then u need to get a 20R intake...the bolts closet to the front of the truck..on the intake manifold...should be where the manual fuel pump goes...it has an arm that goes inside the head...and a lobe hits it...pumps it...yada yada yada.....if u want to take it back to manual...get a 20R intake...(took a while for me to find mine here around Vian, OK.) good luck

My 22R has a mechanical pump but I think if you put a 22R intake on a 20R it would cover up the spot for the mech. pump, Im not totally sure here though... I just always noticed 20R's had a totally different intake and that appears to be a 22R one(then again I could be totally wrong here).

 

yeah the local junkyard here in the town next to me gave me a 22R intake...for my 20R....i was thinking damn ppl dont even know what the hell they're lookin at...they shouldnt be out there pullin parts.....lol..and ur right it does cover up the hole for the manual..(or mechanical whichever) fuel pump

 

Well that probably explains it. I have to take the carb off anyway so I'll go hunting for the stock intake.

I'd still be interested in seeing some pictures of the stock setup and fuel line connections. The stock setup has return lines correct? Also if any of you guys have a picture of the 20r and intake. That would be great too.

phreetogo, I should be bringing home a freshly purchased 80 longbed 2wd w/20R this weekend, I'll try to post some pics ASAP. It appeared to be basically bone stock so maybe it will help you.

OK I'm at a loss. I took off the intake manifold and this is what is underneath. Where does the Fuel pump go??? What do I have hear?? Sorry if these are total Newb ???'s But I don't know what to do now. Ordered a fuel pump and a 20r intake manifold and I'm not sure what is going on now!! Or what to do with them. Thanks John

 

my 1977 20r had an electric pump. I always thought it was because it was a california truck. Something to think about.

Thanks for the pictures. I guess Whoever owned this before replaced the engine with one that used an electric pump. Anyone know of a 20r with the same setup? When I bought it he told me the pump wouldn't fit due to the A/C compressor so they covered it up and put in an electric pump. I guess he made that part up. The pump they put in had a high psi rating with no regulator and killed 2 carbs. I have a lower psi pump on order which was made to replace the mechanical on the 20r.

If anyone if running an electric pump I'd love to see your setup with the return lines and all. Thanks again John

 

no pics sorry, but as I mentioned my 1977 toyota with a 20R ran an electric fuel pump. It was a 20R California Model Coupled to a 3-speed automatic.

EDIT: Dug up a picture, don't know if it'll help, but it shows the front of my engine looked similar

 

So after all this messing around I took the air horn off and bought a new float and needle valve kit. As I was taking the needle valve out I found a nice big chunk of rubber keeping the needle valve from sealing when the float was up. So this little piece of rubber was causing all my problems. I also replaced the electric pump with one made for these toyotas with a lower pressure rating. So I did a lot of unnecessary tinkering but learned a bunch in the process. Now it runs like a champ.
