Need some help with my daughters 4Runner, hope someone can help. 22RE with automatic. She was driving it home from school and said it was going really slow. Engine sounds fine and is running fine in park and neutral. Took it for a test drive and it does not shift automatically. It appears to start out in 3rd as it takes forever to get up to some semblance of speed. Uphill it is dog slow. I can manually shift from low to 2nd to 3rd, and back down. Any ideas on what it might be?

Sounds like a shift solenoid. See if you can get any codes from the tranny ECM.

 

Have you checked the tranny fluid?

 

shift solenoids, get a solenoid kit from http://www.daccoinc.com/ for around 100.00 bucks, some tranny fluid, and a filter and gasket kit(I like nappa's because it holds the bolts for the pan in place when you replace it).
