Question IDL,PNP,ECM-help an old guy out??

I need help deciphering all the abbreviations used in todays repair manuals. I'm an older guy(58), & have trouble remembering what i had for lunch- the "70"s were fun, as I remember. Anyway, what the hell does IDL circut,PNP switch or NE circut or STA circut mean anyway?, & what's the difference between an ECU or ECM. I wish to compile a "dictionary" of sorts to help me in repairing my daughter's vehicles, till they marry a wealthy man who can take care of them. If any one knows where I can this info, I would be grateful.
Thanks, stormy76

TPS = Throttle Position Sensor, it has an IDLe contact that detects a closed throttle position (i.e. engine at idle):

ECM is Toyota-speak for ECU, Electronic Control Module or Unit.

STArt indicates the STArter is being engaged.
NE is from the ignitor, essentially a crank position signal, says the engine is moving. Never heard of the PNP switch.

The Factory Service Manual has all those terms described.

PNP = 'Park / Neutral Position" The PNP switch is the sensor for whether an auto transmission is currently in the Park or Neutral position.
