Frickin Spare tire hanger

I have only had my truck for about a month so I decided to make sure that I can get my spare down today. From past experiences with Toyota I knew it could be a problem. And of course I am going to have to cut it down.

Has anyone Retro-fitted a Taco tire hanger back in there? Anyone know if it can be done?

Yeah you gotta love that spare tire hanger... if you don't exercise the thing at least twice ayear she siezes up on you... mine broke entirely so I don't even have a spare anymore... Don't know about the hanger though I've never looked at them, I'm going to the dealer today so I'll get a print out of the part and take a look... maybe I can give you a better opinion then...

My spare is hangin behind the tailgate. You must swing it out everytime you access the tailgate, I hate it. Can I mount it under the bed of truck in that void, is there a kit for relocation?

Here are some pictures of a Taco mount that i bought to use on my '81, one of those things I still need to do
Any way the rod it about 16" long with two 'u' joints, could cut to fit or extend and mount where you need it, the winch part itself mounts with 4 bolts about 2.5" X 2" if that gives you an idea. I held it up to the crossmember on my Trekker and it looks like it would be an easy project.

Don't cut anything if you think there's a chance of re-habing the winch. You can get the spare off by letting all of the air out and lifting it with a jack. Just fab up something to spread the force on the underside of the tire (leave room to get your hand in and move the hanger out of the way), put the jack under that and raise it until the hanger is loose enough to move out of the way. I've also done it without the jack, but it's tough to keep the tire from falling on you while you're down there like a turtle on it's back.

Don't cut it yet. I had the same problem....soak the whole assembly in PB blaster over a week time frame, then beat on it with a hammer, it'll break free. Well, it worked for me. Good luck!!

That is not from a Tacoma. That is from a 2nd gen 4runner with the 31" spare tire option. You stuck the rod in the rear bumper at an angle, which is why you needed that rod from the junction to the center carrier.

Anyone soak the thing in some phosphoric acid to eat all the rust? Is there anything that works to keep these things working properly? I had nothing but trouble with the one on my 88 PU

Lots of grease/lubrication. I extend mine, then spray the cable and winch every oil change. As for the acid, I don't know.....try soaking it in some coca cola!

I also have a huge issue with mine on the Pickup. The P.O. must have cut the cable ,and the winch parth or it looks completely rusted out. I plan on getting that winch part removed then removing the bolts. (I'll be getting someone to ) I'd like to get a new one so I can put my spare back underneath where it should be. Any thoughts? Comments?

Showing the rusty cable\winch part under the bed that I would like to remove^^
The black scrapes are just from poking around with a screwdriver to make sure my frame wasn't turning to rust too.

Another picture from the side angle showing more rust\salt on the frame surface/spare tire mount.

What about a metal plate with 3 studs tapped into it. Bolt/ weld the plate to the site of the tire winch and then secure the wheel to the studs with lug nuts.
