Rear axle shaft seal question
#2
I just pounded it in as far as it would go with a hammer and a seal driver. The outer surface of the seal was about even with the beginning of the horizontal surface of the axle housing. What, I mean by that is the surface where the inner diameter stop decreasing if that helps.... I leaned to use Permatex "Right Stuff" on the outside of the seal to make sure it doesn't leak as well.

Good info Guapo. I am not trying to steal the thread but as I was reading that writeup I started thinking. If an axle seal leaks because of a clogged breather, does the axle seal really need to be replaced? I am guessing the oil would just seep between the shaft and the inner part of the seal right? Maybe there is some actual movement/damage to the seal when this happens or maybe it is just a good idea to replace the seal when you get a leak since you will have almost everything apart anyways? Any thoughts?
