2.4 liter stock airbox/intake.. why so frickin' huge?

Hello all, first post. I acquired my '95 tacoma 2.4 liter about a month ago after selling my '93 mazda mx-6. I needed a truck more than a sports coupe, so... here I am.

The first thing I noticed when lifting the hood was that monstrosity of an air intake. Why so many chambers? Air cannot possibly flow smoothly into the intake manifold with all that junk in the way. I do like how the stock airbox pulls air from outside the engine bay, but I've got to do something about the way air gets to the engine after the MAF sensor. It can't possibly be the best route.

Are those chambers/containers just to make it quieter at WOT? what a mess!

yeah that is pretty much just to make it quiter. There are a few mods for the 3.4l that may apply to yours but i am not sure.

1 is the ISR mod (search) and the Deckplate mod (search again).

With me i just got a new short ram intake instead of going through all that work and $$ to do those. I spent $50 on that and it work great and has a GREAT sound. plus it flows better than stock (and it looks better)

thanks for the reply Ace

I'm not interested in hacking up the airbox since I read that some of you wish you hadn't done it. I modded my mx-6 like mad, but later wished I had spent money on more useful things.

I changed spark plugs yesterday after a seafoam treatment, and found the #3 and #4 plugs were a beotch to get to because of that big 'silencing' system. I'm leaning toward the short ram intake tube to clean up the engine bay a little.

If you don't plan on doing alot of off roading, I'd go ahead and purchase a short ram intake. I had one when I first bought my 4runner, but canned it a few months later for the deckplate mod, avoiding the chance of hydrolock.
