IFS axle shaft breaking before CVs

Anyone heard of this happening? It happened to me last weekend, and I was curious how common it is.

My last two CV's have broken in the outer splined section, not the actual joint.

Here's a pic of the most recent one:


(took a lot of gearing, front locker only, and some happy throttle to do it)

Nice clean break. Twisted that puppy right off like a bottle cap.

I'm sitting here with both peices in my hand. Wondering how I managed to break everything else first. Couple ring & pinions, chewed my side gears out once. Yep, traction kills.

That ring of material where the seperation occurs is only 1/4". WTF is with that? I imagine I'll be needing of fairly constant supply of these in the future.
