what would one go for now a days? I've got one that I will be getting rid of before to much longer, but I don't have a clue what it's worth. I intend to swap in a 4.3L chevy motor. There's nothing wrong with my 3vze, just had HG, waterpunp, timing belt, plugs, wires, etc done within 100 miles. Mechanic was real impressed by condition of bottom end. Said cylinders showed no signs of wear and it has approx 190k on it.

roundhouse,
You may want to check at Marietta Salvage on Cobb Parkway. I was there on Friday and I think that I saw 5 runners and the engines were in the garage.

instead of running a 3liter v6 why not run a supercharged 3.4v6 and get the converion kit from offroad solutions your not going to have the headgasket problems like in the 3.0s

The 3.0 is just to get it running and sell before the HG blows.
If I keep it, I'll swap in an EFI 5.0 Ford or a Lexus 1UZ, or maybe a Volkswagen turbodiesel.
I swapped in a EFI 5.0 in my 74 Bronco, so I know that one is easy with the stand alone computer, plus it will run with every sensor unplugged, unlike Yota engines.
I traded a beater that cost me $200 for the 95 runner with the HG already blown.
We have a 96 4runner limited that we bought about 6-7 years ago. But the 3.4 seems a little wimpy, anything over 62-65 on a hilly 4 lane with the cruise set, and the trans just saws back and forth, drives me nuts.
It will down shift, rev up overshoot the cruise setting and close off the throttle, shift back into OD, and repeat the cycle about every minute.
My brothers 95 Bronco will down shift, but will not go back into OD until you go over the top of the hill.
Ive never driven the 3.slow Im sure Id find it way underpowered.
