Hi all,
I have a 04 tacoma doublecab with a TRD supercharger and 7th injector. No other mods (no headers, etc). It is the california version with two catalytic converters.

With less than 40k miles, I've gone thru two sets of catalytic convertors (both front and back cats, twice now). They get plugged up. My guess is that the exhaust is getting to hot if I get on the throttle for too long.

Anybody else have this problem? What can be done?

Luckily, federal law warranties the cats for 7 years, 70k miles, but sooner or later the free lunch will be over. Plus its a pain in the #@$ to have my truck in the shop.

What leads you to blame the supercharger? There's an awful lot of them out there, with and without the 7th kit and there doesn't seem to be an epidemic of cats being ruined.

What do your A/F ratios look like? What about your EGT's?

I am running the same set up you are and am not eating cats; so, I don't see the cause and effect relationship you are implying.

 

Many people who run the TRD 7th injector suffer from melted cats due to running overly rich. While this may not be the case for everyone, that's what sounds like is causing your problem.

Go with a aftermarket high flow version since some of the better ones are designed to deal with high temps.

 

A lot of people in your situation went with URD's 7th injector upgrade kit (that is, if it's truly your 7th + S/C that is causing your problems). I don't see the kit on their site anymore, but it came with a bigger fuel pump (walbro 190), an additional injector controller (URD AIC), 2 step colder spark plugs ( Denso IK22's), a 170 degree thermostat, and tuning software. With the upgrade kit, it allowed the end user to tune the TRD 7th Injector kit to run properly. Out of the box, the TRD 7th is known to have issues with running rich/lean (the results varied widely per person). If you are interested in going this route, and taking control of your fuel & timing to get the optimal performance and reliability out of your engine, give URD a call. Ask if they can still put together a TRD 7th injector upgrade kit for you. Be aware though, when you go this route, you are opening a big ol' can of worms. Not only will you want to get the components listed above, you will also want to get a AFR Meter to aid you in tuning.

You do know about the 8 year 80,000 mile Federal mandated emission warranty on all cars and trucks, If you have less than 80,000 this should have been free. Since it is a toyota supercharger they should have nothing to say.

 

I have a 2011 supercharged 4.0 Tacoma first set of cats plugged at 40,000 and just today at 70,000 they plugged again ! WTF. Toyota they have since stopped sell supercharger kits all together. Wonder why? At 5000.00 for cats I say they were tired of footing the bill to replace them Bart
